Hi!

Has anyone here (which I suppose sounds odd else you wouldn't be here) ever beaten or know anyone who's beaten social anxiety.

Does CBT really work for this?

I've had this thinking about it since I was a teenager, but it's manifested into being pretty bad over the past few years. I'm a loner and kind spend my whole life trapped by it. Its gotten to the point where I feel like I'm watching the world on tele. Like I'm on the outside looking in. I simply don't know how to beat this. I've got a firm grasp on how it works I think, and can see it's just another form of my anxiety but no matter how I rationalise my thoughts or situations, it never changes anything. It feels like it's just who I am, like it's the way I'm wired and I just have to either accept it or learn to live with it.

I think the answer has to be Yes.

I am much better now after CBT, I'm not sure its a cure all and works for everyone but lots of people get good results.

I had a good experience with CBT to tackle social anxiety as well. It worked, I think my anxiety reduced by around 90%, it didn't disappear entirely but it went from being a significant problem to being a minor buzz almost like excitement.

How old are you? In my area they have a special service for young people so I only had to wait less than a week where as in my old area i waited over 4 months. So it can vary a lot.
I would give it a go if you can.

I'm 39. I've had CBT twice before but to be honest but I didn't really apply myself to the techniques. Why, I don't know. It's like I just carry on and even though I want to solve this and was working with therapists at those times, I'd go away and not really follow the things through. Maybe I was just too anxious and depressed at the time. This time I want to.

I think that with social anxiety, you will work to solve it if it really is a problem for you. I don’t really want to socialise but have to work at other aspects of my anxiety. Winning slowly there.

It is harder to rethink your attitudes when you are not in control of your psych illness though. When I was a voluntary bereavement counsellor we were told that the time had to be right for someone to be in therapy. Not sure I agree 100% with that. Sometimes you have to make a really determined effort to take that first step.
It sounds as though you might be at the stage now where you want to change

Depends how messed up you are it done absolutely nothing for me. I'm starting to consider the fact there may only be one way out despite the fact that i carefully consider the beauty in life on a daily basis. Love to all and everyone deserving of it xx

What do you mean by not in control of your psyche? do you think that neuro-pathways have formed and they somehow lock thought patterns.

I think 'the time is right ' thing is right be honest. I'm on my third therapist, and I'm now just starting to believe change can happen and the things she is telling me are finally sinking in and I'm starting to believe it. Think that's what they mean by 'the time is right'. You have to be in that stage where you're ready to accept that you are in the drivers seat, only you can control and help fight it.
