Hi,

Just wondering if Lithium is only prescribed for Bipolar or a mood disorder in general.

My friend is taking it but I would never straight up ask or push them to tell me why they are on it they just told me they are on it. Could there be any other reason?

Thank you for understanding, just concerned here.

Lithium is primarily used as a treatment for bipolar, though it can be used for other illnesses like schizophrenia (if other options don't work). So you never know, though it is mostly bipolar as far as i know.

Most commonly used for Bipolar

However I take for Persistent Depression that no Anti-depressant has helped, this is to prevent my mood dipping into the Severe Depression state. It doesn't improve my mood, but does prevent my mood dropping. In the UK it would only be prescribed by a Mental Health specialist as most GPs do not like using it due to its side-effects

Some people with depression and emotional disregulation disorder take it. It is used for other illnesses but quite a lot of people with bipolar disorder take it.

Unstable moods.

They had said it was just for stress then quickly changed subject, but it would be for something much more severe than stress? Just a white lie out of embarrassment or something?

I have just realised you are talking about a friend.

I think if they don't want to tell you you should respect their privacy. However, if they wanted to keep it a secret, they wouldn't have let your see their medication. Maybe they want you to ask?

If it is a friend though, i would ask what it is for because i would want to support them.

Lithium is one of the oldest and most reliable medications for bipolar (for long term maintainance) and can prevent suicidal thinking/behaviour in patients. But in recent years, it has fallen out of favour due to newer drug with fewer side effects such as lamotrigine. Lithium is still widely used, because its cheap and works very well from people with a 'classical' case of bipolar, with alternating periods of mania and depression, but with times of stability between episodes. However, its not as effective for people with a more complex clinic picture, who experience mixed states, rapid cycling and psychotic symptoms. Also, it comes with a bunch of physical side effects and can cause kidney damage in the long run.

For the afformentioned reasons, I am not on lithium. But for many people it can be an absolute lifesaver.

It can also be used as an 'aumentation agent' for people with Major Depressive Disorder (unipolar depression) when antidepressants have failed or cannot be tolerated.

No.

It is possible to have severe bipolar and severe schizophrenia and be prescribed no drugs whatsoever.

No. And be a serious mess of a person. Well it all depends what your safety network is I guess , but it could be difficult to sustain good quality of life with no stability. It's a bit like saying you are in need of a new heart but we are not putting you on the transplant list. Why do people not understand d the brain is a complex physical organ? When it is not functioning at a good enough level then physical and mental illness will transpire.

It is possible to have severe bipolar and severe schizophrenia and be prescribed no drugs whatsoever.

So more than likely it would never ever be prescribed for stress??

No, I don't see why a heavy psychiatric drug such as Lithium would ever be prescribed for stress. Why do you ask? Is this what your friend told you?

Yes they said it was just for stress and changed the subject, just basically wanted to know if it was a white lie of sorts just to hide the truth out of embarrassment or was there actually some chance that it actually was for stress

Yeah, most likely was a white lie. A lot of people with bipolar disorder tend to keep their illness a secret due to the stigma associated with having mental health problems. My advice would be not to pry too much, its a touchy subject, if this person is someone that you care about and is close to you, I'm sure that given time they will open up to you. But for now respect their boundaries. Its not a easy thing to talk about mental health.
