17 years ago I was severely depressed. The experience was so horrendous and I was traumatised by it. For the last 5 years I have been ill with anxiety. The root cause is that experience all those years ago. I don't have flashbacks but more and more I'm starting to think I have PTSD

Any thoughts?

Hi there. While depression can be extremely hard to deal with and can seem/feel traumatic it's not something that can cause PTSD.If you've been through severe trauma in the past it is possible you could have it though since depression is and can be a PTSD symptom.

I do suggest you talk to a professional though if you're not already. That way you can explore what's going on and the cause of your anxiety.

PTSD is when a traumatic event sticks in your mind & won't go away, normally people can sort of "get over" upsetting things that happen & move on, but if something happens that sticks in your mind, that's PTSD.

PTSD is not from something "upsetting",it's caused from trauma. To be diagnosed the trauma has to be pretty severe and life threatening.

If you have blocked out your trauma resulting in secondary depression than maybe. What triggered off your depression and anxiety?
