Hello everyone,
I was wondering if you could help me with a question I have.
Those with BPD are known to have an unstable sense of identity. My issue is that I don't know what one is, so I can't judge how developed or underdeveloped mine is. What factors constitute an identity?

That makes a lot of sense, thank you for explaining it to me!
I'm a strange one with the accents for sure (forgot what mine sounds like) but my values are quite settled. Thinking about it I do change my mannerisms in different social settings. Your answer cleared up a lot for me :nod1:

I think your identity is the answer to the question 'Who are you?'

Pepecat, I'm guessing I don't have a very developed sense of self considering my knee-jerk reaction to that question was 'I have no f**king idea'. Eek! I think that settles it. Thanks!

I maybe should have elaborated a little on my answer - it was a bit brief!

Some people would answer than in terms of their job - 'I'm a teacher', for example.
Some would answer in terms of their relationship - 'I'm a wife / mother'
Some would answer in more abstract terms.... they might just say 'eccentric', or 'thoughtful', or 'class clown' or whatever.

I think most people would probably give a longer answer, that would describe (or attempt to) the whole 'them'. It's a difficult question to answer, and probably most people would give some sort of answer, but not be happy with it, or not feel that it tells you enough about them.
