I fall asleep on the sofa in front of the TV, then always wake up around the same time. Between 3 and 3:15 am. It's not a good restful sleep. I'm still aware of things going on. Then when i go to bed i can't sleep. I used to be able to sleep easily. Now i'm downstairs again. Walking round. Watching TV. I just can't relax. And why do i always wake up at the same time? It's the Devils hour or something. Is that creepy? I suppose only if you believe in that stuff..

I think your body clock just gets used to certain times of waking. Like when you get up at 7 each day for work, when I was off at weekends used to drive me mad I would still wake at 7 :(
I guess it's retraining your body clock...changing habits, not always easy,
Perhaps try staying awake not falling asleep on sofa and go to bed later,
I do know sleep is one of the most important things to me.
If I don't get the right amount , or enough sleep it can make me so much worse.
If trying things out don't work and you still have problems, check it out with GP.
Best wishes

Thank you for replying to me Unique. I had a terrible experience with the GP yesterday and it's put me off going again. I hated going to the doctor before but now it's made me even worse.

I love to sleep. Once I'm in bed and and I'm not feeling crappy i can fall asleep and not wake up till after 9 but it's when I'm having panic attacks I stay downstairs and end up falling asleep xx

If you get involved with doctors they will just give you pills. Then you'll be stuck on pills. Good Sleep Hygiene means you go to bed at a certain time. It means not doing anything too exciting before bed, no exercising for example. It means no coffee or sugar before bed. Falling asleep in front of the tv is not good sleep hygiene. I also wake up around 3am but am able to go back to sleep. I responded to your post because I use to have severe total insomnia and you wouldn't have written that post unless you were really upset with your sleep.

I know, they just throw pills at you. I refuse to take sleeping tablets. I'm like this when i'm really upset. When i can handle things a little better i sleep ok. I just have to try and be calm but it's very difficult.

Dear RunningOnRiver, please, please be calm and allow yourself sleep, beautiful sleep. I have a painting of a beautiful sleeping woman over my bed. I call it visual goal setting. Nothing you are getting upset about can be changed by being upset. Go with the flow. Sweet Dreams.

fwiw I measure my MH status by certain things

One of which is

What hour I wake up in the morning

for the last 5 years its been 3am

a couple of times this year its been 2am

My therapist has actually identified this sleep issue as a Major One; something to work on Before any other work can be successful.

Its like clockwork. The more stressed I am, the earlier I awake. And I get out of bed and start my day which means I'm ready for lunch at 8am. No surprises for guessing this waking behavior is self perpetuating - the earlier you wake the earlier you fall asleep again.

Its actually a HUGE MH signifier and 3am is traditionally Depression Hour. Ask any professional. Its a Red Flag.

Im just sort of coping over the Christian Shutdown which is ongoing Downunder, luckily I have mirtazapine which I use as a sleeper. Last night I only took half but it got me through to 5.30am which is a Huge Win these days.

RunningOnRiver, I also struggle with insomnia, and I find the evenings I don't watch tv I tend to sleep better. There are 2 issues with screen time (tv, computer, IPad, phone) before bed: (1) the light that these devices emit interferes with melatonin production and thus causes sleep problems, and (2) the content of tv shows can also be too stimulating for sleep to happen.

Caffeine can also be a problem for many people. For me, sometimes even one cup of tea in the morning can interfere with my sleep. Also, light can be an issue. Many of the new energy efficient light bulbs mimic natural daylight, which definitely has it's benefits, but if you have these lights on up until bedtime, they can also cause sleep problems. I now have small table lamps in my living room that have regular lightbulbs so that I don't have the energy efficient ones on in the evening.

I also find that listening to calming music before bedtime helpful. Sometimes I listen to it until I fall asleep. Here are links to some of my favourites. I hope this helps.

Music With Water Sounds
Relaxing Music
Gentle Stream

Thank you everyone.

Poopy Doll, i know nothing i'm getting upset can be changed but i can't help it. That's the problem.

I've just gone and fallen asleep again on the sofa. Must have been about 7:30, because i sat down to watch the football

BorderlineDownunder that's terrible. I don't actually start my day at that time. I do get yo sleep eventually but sometimes stay in bed till 11am which is terrible. It's a vicious circle.

valleygirl, i wish i didn't the love the tv so much but it's my life as sad as it sounds. I don't drink coffee or anything with caffeine but all the tv's in our house are on 24/7 :innocent:

Oh I'm so sorry you had a bad experience with the GP. I hope you can get support from the surgery if you need it. Ask to see another GP if you can, I inow at the surgery I go to there are a few gps and I don't always see the same one.

Do hope you can find some resolve to this.
It's good to be able to write it here, at least that's what I find.
I'm wishing you all the best.

Hi
Just wanted to say.
Like valley girl I listen to things to help me sleep. I like YouTube meditations and it really helps, it took me a while to find some I like but there are lots available.

Yes there's a lot of doctors but it's difficult to get an appointment with the ones i want. My favourite doctor (the one that left) everybody loved him and wanted to see him because he was so caring, and you just couldn't get an appointment with him. It was like Goldust. If you got an appointment then it felt like you'd won the lottery .

Now he's gone i like seeing the nurse practioner who's lovely. Unfortunately the stupid rule is you have to call on the day to book an appointment. They tell you to call at 8am but then the lines full. If there's too many people waiting the automated message tells you to call back later. By the time they let you stay in the queue and they answer. All the appointments have gone. People even queue up outside at 8am to get an appointment because but the lines always busy. I made my appointment with that horrible woman 2 weeks in advance because she's the only one that they allow to do that for. Perhaps it's because no one wants to see her? I like to find someone nice and just stick with them because they will know me and know what I'm like, but the search continues!

I don't like that slow music that plays in beauty parlours etc. I'd prefer to listen to a bit of Guns 'n' Roses :clap: Ok i'm in an even crazier mood tonight!! :peace:

This might be weird to some of you but try ASMR on YouTube it's so relaxing and helps me fall asleep. I listen to it almost every night along with hypnosis ones to help with anxiety, detachment from over thinking, depression ect all kinds of things really. I recommend heather feather for ASMR on YouTube hope this can help some of you get some good nights sleep :sleepy2:
