Because it's not compartmentalised, it's all mixed up, and our emotions go up and down all the time. Perhaps this is so we can battle the sadness and will the happiness to win.

to feel so happy and so sad all at the same time
I’m exactly the same. Mostly happy due to the fact that like you, my life is probably better than it’s ever been, yet every day an underlying depression. It’s just the way we are Fairy. We will probably always be victims of our emotions and feelings. We just have to manage them the best we can, try to remain calm in times of trouble and when overwhelmed always try to remember it’s just a thought and just wait until the wave of emotion subsided, which it always does.
To feel any happiness is a wonderful feeling so just try to have more happy days than sad. Life will then truly be worth living. 🤗

I can relate to feeling seemingly contradictory emotions. The thing is two opposites can be true at the same time thus evoking seemingly opposite emotions
