Hi,

I've just been wondering, how do the people around you cope when you're having a psychotic break?

I dread to think what will happen if I relapse because I really put my family through the mill. I've lost contact with a lot of people due to deleting contact information when I was ill. I don't think my relationship would survive me relapsing, either. I already wish I could apologise to lots of people for my paranoid behaviour or explain myself but many ships have sailed.

How do the people around you cope when you're unwell? Do you have people that stick by you no matter what?

Being on the other side of the fence as carer, I can tell you that I went in full panic mode as the psychosis developed in my son. From small discussions that seemed a bit off (some paranoid thoughts after he used some drugs) until he was convinced that we, the parents, are going to kill him and then to the full blown psychosis in the psychatric ward we went through all the stages of desperation.I lost 12kg in 10 days (I couldn’t eat), I wasn’t able to sleep, I was crying most of the time, I had to keep away from work and it all ended with my dream to kill all my family because it would be better for us all. Anyway after I got the psychatric help I needed and I started educated myself on the subject of psychosis, I can say now that I would react totally different to a new episode, I wouldn’t go to a hospital anymore (it was traumatising), I would get help at home as needed, I would be around him with everything that worked fine this year and new things if needed, I wouldn’t freak out again. I am sad that we had to experience this with our son, but I gained a lot of insight on this terrible mental health problem so I am going to help others as much as possible.

It sounds like it was really hard on you. It's good that you feel you would cope better with another episode God forbid it should happen again. I think that's quite unusual but it's hard to know. Hopefully you won't find out.
