Thankfully I have a full sleeved shirt turn up from eBay so I should be able to cover things for work. Had another well meaning query last night when one of the younger guys asked outright why my arm had so many cuts, I brushed it off with the reply that I guessed I was just unlucky. I don't think he was convinced but it nipped that line of enquiry in the bud.

I still feel like I told him an untruth though. I made the decision that led to everyone of my scars so I can't blame bad luck or anyone else.

Recently the guy concerned approached me discretely and apologised for his queries because someone else had apparently explained to him what marks might indicate (At this stage I'm assuming poor Schroedinger is noo

Hi, Simonr ! I've just stumbled upon your question and I'm also starting to ask myself these questions, since every day it is hotter and hotter.

Seeing it is not a recent post, I'd like to ask, if you don't mind... How are you doing today ? How is your work ?
I've seen a video, where a girl gave some example answers, either of type "don't want to talk about it" or ironic. Would you be interested or have you already found your solution ?

normally i just laugh it off and either say i'm clumsy and got into a little accident (which to be fair isn't a total lie, i get other injuries and shit on me all the time just not the self harm), or that the cat scratched me, or if i'm at home i claim it was from work. but i also try to keep the damage on my arms minimal at one time to where i can easily explain it away.

I usually tell people the truth and the reactions I get vary. Sometimes people get awkward, sometimes they’re concerned, most often people notice and don’t say anything as they can already guess what happened. I thankfully only had one person who knew it was self harm and still made inappropriate comments (making fun of my scars) but I shrugged if off because that person was a known asshole. The hard part is when children ask. Ive recently come up with “Sometimes when people feel bad they act mean. When I felt bad, I was mean to myself.” Maybe that would help? I know it’s meant for children but you’re saying what happened without saying self harm so maybe that would work? Or sometimes I say I injured myself and people just assume it was accidental and they let it go
