My son is over 18 and council have said that I owe money due to him being a non-dependant. The council say he should have been on benefits in order that the non dependant deduction wouldn't apply - He is severely mentally ill, so ill he could not sign on for universal credit or any other benefits. I have heard that they take this into account with council tax but has anyone know if Housing benefit also take mental health into account when it comes to non dependants?

Contact your local CMHT and ask them if they can assist you with this. Tell them that it is affecting your son's mental health due to the worry and anxiety. They may pay it for you or convince the council not to pursue you for this.
