Hi, I am Chris, I need some help

How do you deal with fear of strangers and confrontation? It scares me so much. Last night I saw a couple of teens sitting on the roof of an old outbuilding at the bottom of my garden. Immediately I was in a state of panic and anxiety. I went and spoke to them, and they apologised and were nice about the whole thing. They thought it was abandoned and didn’t realise it was part of my garden area.

They apologised again and left straight away…..

Unfortunately, my mind started going at that point telling me they would be back, others would come, it would be used as a drug den, harassment etc etc etc. I then drank loads of wine to drown out the voices and woke this morning feeling awful and even more anxious about the whole thing. I am dreading coming home tonight because my mind is convinced its going to happen again and get worse and worse.

I don’t know how to stop this, its not just this though, I am scared to go anywhere that is unknown to me and always think I am going to get into bad threatening situations. I have avoided so many things for years now and missed out on so much.

I have to get this sorted, I have had counselling sessions and nothing has helped so far. It is getting worse.

Hi Chris, welcome.

One thing that is helping me right now is to try to practice the mind throwing all kinds of thoughts (good and bad) at us constantly. It never stops. So I try to acknowledge that bad thought, fear, anxiety and try (not always successful) to reassure myself that the thought(s) is just that: a thought and i don't have to do anything with it. I try not to follow that bad thought and try to re-focus on a positive thought that helps me. I admit it is challenging, especially when the bad thoughts overwhelm all reality. Practice, practice.

Just a suggestion on what sometimes works for me.
