Yes, mighty sound advice. From what you've written you seem to really care about what you do now for a living (well, nearly qualified as you say). I'm considering a similar career change. If you don't mind me asking, tell me, did you do a specific MH nursing course, or general nursing then specialise towards the end? Also, did you have to do any general medical nursing training, such as drawing bloods etc (I'm guessing the answer is yes, as you have to be able to administer depot injections, right?)

Hope you don't mind me asking questions on your introduction thread. How was the defence of your presentation?

Thanks emski :)

There are specifically trained nurses to take bloods, and obviously the docs can too. It's not something I've had to do as yet, but wouldn't shy away if the oppurtunity came up for a training course! I have done some depots - around 8 so far, and those I've done have all been more than happy with my technique. I'm also diabetic and inject myself 4 or 5 times a day, so I totally understand how injections can hurt like hell sometimes!

With regard to the course, I'm doing a 3 year registered nurse diploma. Everyone does the same first year, whether adult, child or mental health. We learn loads of biology and core nursing stuff. Second and third year we all split into "branches" so the past 2 years have been 50% classroom and 50% placements, so I've been ward based, care home based, and community placed.

My next two 7 week placements are eating disorders and CAMHS (child and adolescent services).

My presentation defense went awfully. Constructive criticism at it's harshest! However, they might have been hard on purpose as they said "well, they might ask this in interviews and you need to be able to back up your theories" so maybe they were just being plain ol meanies. :)

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much. The reason I ask is because I have a syringe phobia, particularly when it comes to drawing rather than injecting and I would obviously have to conquer that first!

I can't see it would be a problem really. I've not had to do it in three years.

phew!

Good to know - thanks again. Sorry to hear defence went bad though - it might have seemed worse to you than it was though, so try not to beat yourself up

Hi Mark and :welcome: to MHF :) I am also a former nurse, and also a 'service user' with secondary depression due to chronic ill health :(

Anyhow, it is good to see yet another new member join MHF (y) How did you find out about it? I'm intrigued.

I'm not quite sure how I found it really, a bit by accident. Was googling for info, as you do, and saw the forum and had a quick look. Expected it to be an American site for some reason. Saw the content and thought "brilliant".

It's great here, you guys should be proud.
