Help to overcome my phobias

Hi,

I am new here and looking for some advice on overcoming my phobias. I have recently accepted a new job which will involve quite a bit of driving in the countryside. The driving isn't the issue as i have been driving well over 10 years. However I have a few phobias that are going to cause me some real problems. I have an irrational fear of trains and all things relating to trains, such as level crossings, railway bridges, railway stations, I also breakdown at the sight of a viaducts/aqueducts, most large bridges infact, any large body of water. Stick a bridge over that body of water and I just can't cope.

I also have issues with getting lost, not so much a phobia but I don't handle being lost very well, however my issue with being lost is greatly heightened by my fear of maps and yes this includes sat-navs, I am okay until I see water or railway lines on the map.

I've sat here a for a few hours trying to pluck up the courage to look at some pictures of these things but i just can't bring myself to look.

I was aware of the obstacles I would have to overcome before accepting the job, I convinced myself I could address them because I now have too. I start my job in two weeks time and I am getting more and more frightened about starting, so much so I am considering not taking the job.

I know I can do this in baby steps, for example my mothers house has a railway line that runs behind it and I can now 12 months on stay in the back garden when I know a train is coming.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hi :welcome: to the forum angeldoll.

Well the job is not the be all and end all. There are other jobs, there are always other jobs.

Your phobia is a difficult one, especially the trains thing.

Have you thought about working locally with a commute of a walk or bicycle? It would be less stress and you would feel good with the exercise.

I'm okay with driving routes I am familiar with, and I'm even aware there is a train line that pretty much runs down the side of the road that I drive down everyday to get to my current job, but I can't see it. I have overcome one level crossing through extreme conditioning. The county I live in is quite big so would take me forever to condition myself to everything that I might encounter. I do still have the option of staying in my current job, but the new job is my dream job, just not the driving into the terrifying unknown.

Ok the other option is to find a new place closer to your dream job. You could move home.

I am not sure how to tackle phobias. When I was a little boy i was terrified of cats and dogs, but i grew out of it as i got older.

There is a theory that if you confront your fear it can help. Have you tried going to a train station or viaduct with someone else and see if you can manage it?

I did go to a small railway station about 4 years ago, stood on the bridge with the night guard after explaining my situation, I ran off before the train came. I think i might ask my partner to take me out this weekend, see if I can pluck up the courage to even look at one viaduct or stand in the local train station. The last time I was on a train was about 12 years ago and it didn't go well at all, I didn't even know I had the fear until i walked onto the platform. I don't even recall getting onto the train in the first place, I've done well to block it out.

The drive to my new job is fine, it's the travelling as part of the job itself.

What if you get a taxi and knock yourself unconscious for the journey - and then wake up when you get there?

Not a bad idea... closing my eyes might be less painful. However knocking myself out a few times a day I might forget I'm afraid of anything anyway
