Hi Guys,

I'm currently 2 years since my initial diagnosis of schizophrenia. At first I took medication for about 4 months (Zyprexa), then I stopped taking it for a year. Exactly 1 year after my initial onset I had a relapse, so I went back on Zyprexa and had horrible side effects. I was highly sedated, sleeping 12 hours a day or more, had erectile dysfunction (NOT fun at all), and gained 20 lbs. I then switched to Abilify to escape those side effects but had terrible insomnia and did not sleep for 3 weeks. I am currently on Risperdal now and am experiencing the same side effects as from Zyprexa! Weight gain, high sedation, and erectile dysfunction.

My question to you guys out there is what medication (medications) work best for you? Are you able to function day in and day out without sleeping too much? Are you able to hold down a full time job while medicated? Are you gaining a lot of weight? Do you have any sexual dysfunction?

All i want is to be stable, sleep 6-9 hours a day, and have my normal sexual functioning back. Any help is needed and greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Hi :)

I've personally been on quite a few medications, and before the one i'm on now I was on Risperidone. I found that at first I was sedated on it and the inital first few months on it i gained a bit of weight. BUt after a couple of months the sedation wore off and my weight stopped increasing. I found my prolactin level were raised a lot on this medication too.
I'm now on Clozaril - I'm very sedated on it and have been sleeping for around 13 hours a night. I'm hoping this will wear off after a while. I've also gained weight. I feel this is just a small price to pay though - because most of my symptoms are under control with the Clozaril.

Stick it out the side effects may go away after a while.
Good luck!

I am not diagnosed schizophrenia, but rather bipolar. I am on Quetiapine, and whilst it turned me into a zombie at first, I adjusted and now live normally. It did make me put on a littole bit of weight initially, but with a better diet, that fell back off. I know its an anti psychotic, but nto sure if itsgiven to people outside bipolar?? xx

Sounds like you were on too high dosage of Abilify. I would recommend Abilify, but at a lower dosage. From experience Abilify is the only anti-psychotic that does not cause erectile dysfunction. Start on 5mg daily and increase slowly - increase only if required.

I find it horrible that we have to take these drugs and then experience lethargy and weight gain, and are branded as lazy fatties. It is really not our fault.

Plus whatever disorder we have makes life so much more difficult anyway. It is really a screwed up situation.

I am taking Abilify, and I sleep ok and my appetite is ok. I have put on some weight but I dont think it is drug related like olanzapine.

Hey Rick - how old are you? What is your weight before and after? Are you fed up with it all?

quetiapine worked best for me, but i was unable to study, so they moved me to olanzapine, which wasnt so good, i put on loads of weight too, they then put it down to a miniscule amount to reduce the weight problem, now it hardly does anything for me. they were going to move me to abilify but they seem to have forgot, lets see what they say on monday. as a side point im not sure if i can trust my psychiatrist as she says psychiatry is a art not a science!

i'm 27 right now, turning 28 in 5 months. I used to weigh 165 lbs before meds now I weigh 180 plus.... what i'm really fed up with is the lethargy, sedation, and erectile dysfunction... the weight gain I can accept.....

Well....the lethargy is a tough one. The erectile dysfunction is unpleasurable.

Perhaps you can give abilify another chance? You need to give it a few months before your body will get used to the meds, and side effects will even out.

I tried risperidone and abilify.

On risperidone I was tired all the time weight went from about 12 to 15 stone.

On abilify I still feel a bit tired but not as bad and my weight has seemed to have settled at just over 13 stone.

Im thinking of giving abilify another chance. the only thing i'm worried about on the abilify is the insomnia i experienced for a few weeks when I first tried it.... otherwise i think it worked well. but the insomnia, depending on how bad, was the deal breaker...

based on experience and research, abilify seems to be a good drug but it is known to cause insomnia in many ppl. does anyone on here taking abilify sleep well enough or are you afflicted by insomnia??

I take abilify and sleep well - probably too well because I need to sleep a bit in the day too. Only for an extra hour or so.

I in the past taking Chlorpromazine -made me drowsy and I cant remember it having any antipsychotic effects.

Now I am taking Olanzapine -Helps me sleep but again no antipsychotic effects

The delusions are mild and the voices can be loud

Go see the psychiatrist on 20th probably for a med tweak

i get tired sleep 14hrs a night and can't ejaculate, but all meds have side effects and been off them without the right help, if it exists has problems

There are psychiatrists sadly who don't feel informed consent applies in the case of schitzoprenia and they'll lie about the side effects of meds just to make sure you take them

I'm having the same problem. I have been on a wide range of medication and none of it has worked. At the moment I'm on 800mg of seroqule which sort of works cause I notice when I don't take it bit I still have episodes frequently. Others I have tried are risperadole, abilify, saphris and zyprexa. (sorry if I spelt them wrong) all caused weight gain. Ive been lucky with the sedation it usually doesn't effect me. I do have to take 600mg of seroquel to get to sleep as I can't sleep with put any medication but even then sometimes it doesn't work. I have been able to work while on the medication up untill the past few days as I have been getting worse but it is proof you can be on meds and hold down a job. Hope you find the right combination for you soon.
