Help :( Feeling very low

Day 5 of my citalopram and I feel low. I feel like I can't deal with feeling this way anymore & I can't cry at all. I want to give up. Everything. Shall I just wait longer with these tablets, will they get better?

You need to give your tablets a little bit longer. It may not necessarily be the ad for you, but you need to give it about a month.

If it doesn't work go back to your doc. I found Citalopram didn't work for me after a while, I don't do feeling shit so I went to my doc and am now on a different ad.

I'm very worried about seeing my doctor on wednesday - I saw her last week and when she asked if I had thought about suicide I said NO but I have done. I was worried if I told her she wouldn't prescribe me medication and just tell me to go home and talk things out etc and I just needed the extra help of something

What will happen if I own up to these thoughts? Will she stop my medication or put me on something other than citalopram? I'm so worried now!

hi,

you should definitely tell your doctor about feeling suicidal. she needs to know how difficult you're finding things so you get the attention and help you need.

i don't think they'll stop your medication - at the most, they might just give you short prescriptions on a weekly basis, but i doubt they'll even do that.

i hope you try to persevere with the tablets. it does get better - in fact i think you're probably at the worst stage for side-effects, so i'd say give it another couple of days and it will improve gradually.

I have already been given weekly amounts of the tablets to stop me from overdosing she said.. even though I SAID i'd never thought of suicide..

I hope this gets better. I feel so low and rubbish.

Hi Jisatsu,

Tell the truth to your doctor. That is important if you want her to help you. You don't know what she will say in response to what you tell her, but a doctor would want the best for you. If you are prescribed a different medication then it will have been offered to you for a good reason.

I hope that you are able to make the time until your appointment a period of comfort for yourself.

I guess I'll just have to distract myself from my thoughts as much as I can. Usually at a time like this it helps me to cry but I can't even do that! I feel so rubbish and now I'm panicked. I can't cope I don't want to be like this anymore

yeah, it sounds like they're worried about you j, so its good that she's keeping an eye on you by seeing you every week. hang in there - i really hope you feel better soon

I found I couldn't cry when on citalopram, it was very frustrating.

I agree with others here. You absolutely must be honest with your doctor otherwise they will not be able to offer all the help that you need and deserve.

Suicidal thoughts are a common initial side effect of SSRI's but are of course difficult to deal with. Try to immerse yourself in activities you can enjoy and speak to your doctor asap.

there's nothing to worry about there jisatsu - i'm sure she'll understand that you found it difficult to say such a thing. its no problem at all.

in any case, i think she has probably already realized that you may have been feeling that way, and i'm sure she'll be sympathetic.

what you're going through is very very hard, so be kind to yourself j!

Thank you for the support I see my doctor on wednesday as I will have had 7 days being on citalopram. I hope it goes well.

It took me around three weeks to see any benefit! Even now I am not sure if the doseage is correct it made things easier after about week 3. I could cry with it- believe me! Glad that your staying in touch x
