I am a 31 year old man I suffer from body dysmorphc disorder, anxiety, acrophobia and depression which has me suicidal, more so when in contact with people I don't know as it makes me very paranoid.

I live with parents and never leave the house because of this and feel really pathetic.

I have just got a letter about a face to face assessment in two weeks which is an hour away in a big city, so getting there is impossible for me and has me more suicidal than ever..

I explained all this in my questionnaire and it seems like it has been totally ignored this time. I have been in the support group for the last 4 year and last two times I did not need a face to face assessment.

Yet over the last year I have only got worse as in the space of two month I lost 4 friends to suicide because of mental health.

I do not know what to do as I can not get to these appointments and am not even sure I could come out of my room if they were to come to my house.

I have no one to help me with this stuff or know who to turn to so I just keep thinking been dead is the only way to stop this torture.

I feel like be because I'm a man and the way I look people just judge me soon as they see me and dont believe what I say..even my doctor at times or just lack of care.. I really don't know what to do.

Hiya and :welcome: to the forum. I am facing something similar and its scares the hell out of me. I think you need to get hold of mental health services and ask for an urgent appointment. But that won't help with your impending problem.

I feel services don't take such illnesses as yours into account and if you do turn up they will say that you aren't agoraphobic! You can't win on that one. Do you have someone who can come with you and help you with all this? I had my daughter with me who was a great help. If someone drove you there and brought you back it might be helpful.

I otherwise don't know what to suggest, you aren't alone in this on here.

Thanks for the reply, I have family that has offered to come with me but even with family I wouldn't be to do it as they dont have a car and I cant handle public transport I'm at my very worst right now and have been waiting to see a specialist for the last 3 month.

I just received an email from them saying for me to get a home visit I would need to get my GP to write a letter explaining why I can not get to the appointment but I'm not even sure I would be comfortable with that :(

I guess I'm just looking for any advice on if anyone has been able to just get them to request info from my doctor and make a paper based decision? Or what happens If tell them I can't go threw with it? And miss appointment?

It's got me so bad I'm going to struggle to see my doctor this week.

So sorry.
I have some of same mh stuff as you but some different. Would definitely try speak to your GP this week if you can, or write to them and say how bad things are and be clear with needing a letter for ESA to say how much you're struggling. Try see your GP however bad you feel, they can then see what you're dealing with. Could any family members write a supporting letter to say from their point of view how you struggle and that you can't cope with face to face perhaps?
I wish you well x

First of all. Ask them for a home visit. If they say no. Then get a taxi there and back. Ask the driver for receipts. Then submit them along with a form for travel expenses. Which you can obtain from the receptionist at the esa assesment center.

Can you call them and ask for a home assessment? It annoys me that they don't take diagnosis's like this seriously.

i wonder if asking for a home assessment in my case would help. one advocate advised against, they'd say i'm coping at home, if it was that simple, part of the reason i'm coping is the extra benefits

Thanks for all the reply's I have been a real mess over this.

So, out of desperation I emailed them explaining how much this has me on the edge and asked if they would please ask my doctor for additional info as it would put me at ease as it has me feeling suicidal.

I was not expecting it after reading all the horror story's but they agreed and said they would ask my doctor.

Then about 3 hours later I got another email saying a professional had looked at my file and had enough for a referral and a face to face was no longer needed and that DWP would soon be in contact or I could ring them with supplied number.

I'm still very paranoid and won't be to believe this until I hear from DWP via letter but the people I spoke with were very nice and understanding.
