Hello friends. So I have this problem that has been happening more and more lately due to a higher volume of stressful situations in my life... When something awful happens, and I feel immensely overwhelmed with pressure, shame, self-hatred, and suicidal ideation (my therapist calls this "flooding"), I lose the ability to speak out loud. The more people grow agitated with me and demand that I speak, saying things like "nobody can help you if you don't talk", the more stressed I get. It only makes it worse and takes longer for me to be able to verbalize again... I want to scream, "YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW THAT?? YOU THINK I DON'T WANT TO TALK??" but nothing will pass my lips, I can only shake and cry and curl into myself... I've been scouring the internet but I can't seem to find any articles about this problem and am beginning to feel that maybe I am just alone in this and defective... Does anyone else have this problem? If so, do you have a name for it? Any insights or shared experiences would be much appreciated... I may post this to a few places so I can hopefully get some input.

I was just reading about her... It sounds as though she experienced selective mutism, which is much more pervasive and constant than what happens to me... Thank you, though. Sounds like she was a fascinating lady.
