Okay so I’ve felt anxious all day about phoning the doctors to try and get an appointment, I finally did it while I was out on my own in my car in a car park.

Is it just me who prefers that kind of time to phone people? I hate phoning people especially around other people listening!

Anyway, the doctor I want to see is on leave this week, he’s back next week but apparently he’s one of the doctors who has asked the receptionists to ask what it’s about first as you can be sent to a different doctor who may be more suited to the problem. He’s not the doctor that has a particular interest in mental health.

But my problem is that he really is the only one I feel confident enough to tell. Like tell him everything. I feel like if I saw someone else I would just completely clam up and end up hardly saying anything.

So how do you think I could go about actually getting an appointment with him?

I hate this whole thing since covid, if it was before all of that I would be able to see who I felt comfortable with, that’s a massive part of it, feeling comfortable with who you’re telling.

You could try the available doctor and if it doesn't go well, come back and see the other when they are back.

But I may not be able to see the one I want to even when he is back because I have to say what it’s about.

I've done the same many times regarding the phone. I actually did an over the phone IAPT assessment sitting in an empty car park, probably best I did too!
Lack of consistency/continuity is something I find frustrating too as I feel that seeing the same doc is important for seeing changes in you. That being said, if you see a new one and clam up, you're going to confuse the picture regarding your own care, so it's best for you that you do accept that there is someone new to tell things to: they will already know about you from your file too of course. If this particular doctor isn't specialised in mental health related matters then you may actually be better off with someone else and this preference is just about comfort, which I understand. That being said, you can't expect to see this one doc for the rest of your life so it's in your interests to branch out a bit.
But, if you really want to see the same doc then you can simply try requesting to see him by saying that you feel comfortable with him and that's your reasons for it.

Appointments can be about more than one thing. If I’m depressed it will show as insomnia or hypersomnia, change of appetite, lethargy, trouble concentrating etc. Its all tied to my depression but all are things you can go see a doctor for.

I get what you’re saying I really do, it’s just this will be the first time I’m actually going to talk to anyone out loud. Literally the first person. So I really want to feel that safety.

Ah ok. So it's more so a case of you liking this doc in general and but hasn't actually ever heard anything from you about mental health problems, so this is going to be new to you both in that regard? It may be that they go with someone else but you can but try, just really emphasise the point about needing to feel comfortable.
I will say though that the best GP I ever dealt with concerning my own problems was one that openly admitted mental health wasn't his area of expertise and referred me to someone that was. Others just fumbled their way through things not picking up on what they should have.

I just feel like what I need to start that conversation is the feeling of trust and safety. Maybe I’m overreacting and being ‘extra’. I don’t know. It’s always been drummed into us to talk to someone we trust and feel comfortable with but since covid it’s like ‘like it or lump it’.

To be open and so vulnerable is a f***ing scary place to be. It’s not just a conversation about depression, it’s about self harming and the fact that I want to actually show someone what and where. It’s about being suicidal.

I just want to be able to feel safe enough to be honest. Not just chucked in with a complete stranger, that’s not going to help me right now. I just can’t be as open and honest when I don’t feel comfortable or safe. It would be a waste of each other’s time.

But it’s sounds like you know you can’t do it alone. Trusting another, even if it’s someone you don’t know may be an act of trusting a higher power. It’s our secrets that eat us up and destroy us.
