I am interested in Mental Health issues as a local councillor. They affect so many people in the area I represent. I am interested in campaigns that raise awareness, spreading good information, and knowing what to suggest to help.

On a personal note: I am often too busy with outside affairs and my wife sometimes suffers from depression so I do realise that is where I should start. :)

:welcome: Welcome Alecx!

It is great that you recognise that there are a large number of people with mental health difficulties in your area.

One of the ways we are trying to work in local areas is establish local mental health forums so that people can speak together, work together on issues, and campaign to ensure their needs are met in their local area. Please pm me if you'd like to see one established for your area.

I'd hope to see some partnerships formed between ourselves in terms of being online, and many of the physical organisations in local areas so we can all work together to make a difference in people's lives.

One of the important things I am learning from being involved in running the forum is that there are a large number of people who wouldn't actively use local organisation because of issues connected to their mental health.

Many Thanks Mischief. I do see that my County has a local forum but nobody has done much there so will leave a message.

I sometimes read a few things on this forum and what strikes me how beautifully supportive people are. They know how to say good things. It warms my heart to read. Today for me the local elections started as I went out canvassing for the first time. I felt a bit apprehensive beforehand but I've got more use to it over the years. I knock on the door, step back a bit, and be ready to smile when they open. Then introduce myself and ask them if they have any local issues. Have a quick chat then ask if they will be supporting us. But it is also being aware they may be busy, of pressured. I remember one of the first houses I ever knocked at the ladies husband had just died. So in such a case loacl politics suddenly becomes unimportant. Some people are glad for somebody to talk to even if I am really after their vote... others can't get rid of me soon enough. But it is a good thing to do to help keep in touch with lots of people/ Better than just anonymous leaflets through the door although I will be delivering thousands of them over the weeks leading up to May 6th.
