Hi All,

Hope to share my story shortly and seek out some advice/feedback. Have never done this before but after reading a post here recently (~5 mins ago), I thought why not register and share.

Anyhow, hope everyone is having somewhat of a good day/night.

Cheers :hi:

Hi all, this seems like a good thread to post on as I have just joined myself. I am in the same situation at the first user that posted looking to chat to others/seek advice from people in a similar situation who are struggling with their mental and have no one else to turn too. My name is Adam, I'm 25. I have had depression and anxiety about 8 years and coping by using alcohol ☹ I have joined because I need support so please feel free to reply

:welcome: all the new folk, I hope you are settling in and finding the site useful.

Adam, 8 years of depression already at your age, wow, my heart goes out to you that sound's like a tough ride. Alcohol has largely been my coping support, drank way too much late teens early twenties and some drugs mainly when I was involved with bands - this was a bit of a reaction to leaving school in a mess and my hoped for football career didn't materialise - I actually started showing signs of mental illness during matches.

I had a bit of a breakthrough years later when I stopped going out boozing in the early 90s ironically as a way (eventually successfully) to quit smoking as every time I went in a pub I caved in to the nicotine. Drinking at home instead I found I drank a lot less and barring a few blips that has been the case pretty much since. I brew my own so there is always plenty and no need to panic whereas I would start to crave if it wasn't there then have a panic attack going out for it.

Although I became somewhat socially withdrawn due also partly to some other bad experiences in life, it helped me take time to think things through more as I tend to be quiet most of the time anyway. I saved up some money and I went back to college and got myself an education using my fag money to buy books instead.

My life is far from perfect, I tend to take it one day at a time whilst keeping some longer term goals in mind - again the planned career never quite worked out the way I wanted - but through my education I proved something to myself for the first time in my life whilst also enjoying it. I am sure that my alcohol intake being at a reasonable level for a long time is as a direct result of the achievements I made. I can have a drink without feeling guilty. I sought help for it and it did indeed help 'some' although in the end we have to want to help ourselves. The self discipline of having to produce work to deadlines on a regular basis stood me in good stead, I just wish I had done it much earlier in life.
