Hi I'm new to the forum, my beautiful daughter is suffering from mental illness, we have been through so many drugs and poor diagnosis that I thought maybe I'd ask the people that really know the truth, those that suffer from this awful illness and their families. I grew up with a mum who suffered from mental illness and was brought up to believe it was something that people could 'help themselves' if they really wanted to and as a result resented my mums 'weakness' Its only now that I am watching my daughter go through HELL that I understand that mental illness is no different to diabetes or heart disease and should be treated as seriously. When I have more time I will read through some of the posts and maybe find some answers, I wish everyone on here all the best and hope you are getting the best help possible x x

Hi
I so wish it were true..what you were brought up to believe...I think you can push it away for a while, bury it deep under books and work..I was very successful for many years but if its ignored in youth it comes back to bite you on the bum much bigger in your 40s. I hope she gets the help she needs and you can give her the support and hugs she may need from you. it must be so hard for you too though...do you have any support yourself? My partners strain of madness is quite different to mine and I find it terribly hard not to be hurt by it and not to think he has a choice in his actions...it takes more than you have often to support someone with a mh problem. But you are right...information gives understanding..books and forums and as much knowledge as you can find can only help. What is her diagnoses out of interest? Is it the same as your mother? My father had mh probs and I was very unforgiving as a child and young adult, I have bipolar II and my partner has BPD.

Thanks all for the welcome.
I have suffered serious ill health (heart ops etc) and had so much support and sympathy but it seems that the same is NOT true of mental health issues, there is still a stigma attached after all these years, its hard to comprehend but things don't seem to have changed that much in 30 odd years, more drugs but still the same old 'she/hes a bit mad' it sickens me. I only hope that some people on this forum have had more positive experiences that we as a family have had so far and I wish you all well x x
