I am a voice hearer and bipolar. What I wanted to know, is there anyone else who hear voices or heard from voices? And if so, what medication works best at keeping them away for good?

I mostly hear voices when I’m going through an episode so for me taking my medications that prevent the episode helps prevent any voice hearing. I take 300mg of Seroquel nightly. It keeps my mood stable enough to where I don’t lose it as much as I used to.

I've never heard voices but I did have other psychotic experiences 20 years ago. They gave me chlorpromazine (v old antipsychotic) then and it did get rid of the psychosis (seeing things, ideas of reference, paranoid delusions) but then they thought I had recurrent depression with occasional psychosis (I wasn't diagnosed with bipolar till years later) so once the episodes were over, they stopped the chlorpromazine. There are lots of antipsychotics available nowadays though. What does yr psychiatrist suggest? Kind regards, GK.

Lithium is a pure mood stabilizer though, not an antipsychotic. It's likely that it worked for the OP because it got their episode under control. I really think this is something to discuss with yr psychiatrist, as different meds suit different people and just because something works for someone else does not necessarily mean it will work for you. Agree with GK, lithium is a mood stabilizer and does not really treat psychosis (hearing voices). But since with bipolar you only get psychosis in a mood swing, treating the mood swing (with lithium) would in effect help with the psychosis. But really, an antipsychotic (like Seroquel, which Jam1990 is taking) would be the best med for psychosis symptoms. Check with your pdoc.

And what did s/he say? Was the appointment helpful or elucidating?
