Over the last few months, I've been listening to Waking Up by Sam Harris (meditation app). It used to help whenever I did each 10-minute session but I rarely found the time or motivation to do it. However, over the last few days, it's really started to help: around 4 days ago, I started meditating during my day-to-day activities without even realizing it. Yesterday and today, I made a conscious effort to meditate -- not in a dark room, but during my day-to-day activities and I feel less depressed and less anxious. My OCD is also better. Sam says that you get better at meditation the more you practice and it seems to be working for me.

Have any of you had experience with meditation? Has it improved your mental health?

Not with meditation per se, but with MIndfulness yes. It has helped immensely and I still get the intrusive thoughts but I can handle them much, much easier and dump them out of my head easily. Its made a huge difference to my life.

LIke you I find I am doing it almost without thinking now which is brilliant. Living in the "now" is difficult, but I am managing it occasionally.

Actually the app I linked to teaches Mindfulness meditation. :) Is there meditation that isn't Mindfulness?

But why are you tense? Because of your daily stresses or worry that you'll do it (meditation) wrong? Sam Harris says that meditation actually involves doing less than usual because the meditator is less distracted by his thoughts.

I tried meditation when things got really bad last year. I used an app called headspace that was recommended to me. It seemed good but I really struggled to get into it and couldn't shake off my deeply ingrained cynicism or my defeatist attitude. I really wanted it to work and tried for 3 or 4 weeks but couldn't do it.

we have instructors at therapy, out of 6 people 2 fell asleep and 3 said they feel better I was the only one to not get relaxed enough to meditate, I think I am to stressed and my voices get louder when i am quiet.

I think you have to be ready and in the right place for it to work. Sometimes we need to just wait and see. I found that I did Mindfulness as part of DBT (dialectical behavioural therapy), and its not meditation as such, but it does require that you alter the ruts of your brain patterns to healthier ones. It works!
