Hi there. I am brand new to this forum. I have self-harmed since I was 13 years old, and I am 21 now. It has been several months, but I still think about it a lot. I feel like most people grow out this self-harm thing by my age. I haven’t heard of anyone my age or older doing it. Is it just not talked about?

I self harmed most recently at 30 but remember from outpatient treatment when I was 20 that there were older people than that in the group. Perhaps it’s just not talked about as much? Are you getting help? I still think about it occasionally too but have been able to refrain - usually by going to the gym instead.

I don’t think age has anything to do with it as its caused by an internal emotion. I can go for years and not SH then it will come back. When i was last in hospital there was a lady that was older and she severely SHd . I last SH early on this year after going for a few years free and I’m in my 60s

Welcome, I tried to self harm when I was 13/14, tried suicide. Still here, did nothing until now, im 21, started sh when I was 20 managed to stop for a little while, now im back to it.

You arent alone and self harm certainly isnt just for the teens as we've all been taught. You just dont hear a lot of stories about adults and older self harming. I guess it doesn't make much money for the media

I'm almost 40 and just started last January. I can't seem to stop. I'm a long time sufferer with several forms of depression. Not sure why I started but I'm scared. Although I'll sound a bit hypocritical, you can get through this and not do it ever again.
