Hello people, I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder just recently after I began suffering periodic psychosis in connection with Bipolar disorder, I'm seeking a forum to discuss amongst other things strategies on starting a career while coping with the disorder.

I am currently unemployed. I have been going on interviews to find an entry level position so I can make a wage to cover my expenses. I previously worked as a banker but made the mistake of resigning after suffering a case of extreme paranoia and delusions that the staff and clientele were seeking my downfall. I have since recovered although I have lost a great degree of self-confidence. I keep getting asked the question why I left the bank and it frustrates me as I have been having a difficult time developing an answer that doesn't border on a lie. Despite this I try to stay positive and I listen to lots of good music to get me through the day.

Hi Coffeenut!x

First of all, you're definitely doing the right thing by taking steps towards getting a job. But it seems like there is some unfinished business about your emotions and the diagnosis, and I think it's important to address that first. You mention that you struggle to "develop an answer that doesn't border on a lie". My challenge to that would be - why lie? Of course, you could sugar-coat it ("I had really poor health and felt that I wasn't able to do my job properly, so I left my post to concentrate on getting my health back on track"), but being honest with yourself and others about what happened is an important part of the coping process.

As someone who is working with mental health issues in the financial services industry, I appreciate that it can be difficult to talk about your mental health - although things aren't perfect, they are improving slowly but surely, and that comes with open dialogue. The other thing I would say is that you seem to feel a lot of regret about what happened and what you did, but those are in the past - they cannot be undone. From one professional to another, I would advise that you take the situation at hand and make the most of what you have in the present moment, because that is what you can control!x

Much love <3

Hi R_Sxo,

I am honest with everyone when the question comes up, its more often than not the recruiters who I believe dislike to hear the truth that I had to take nearly a month to recover as it shows on my resume. Also, while its illegal to discriminate against the disabled I believe that it happens more often than not.

Thank you for the words of encouragement, Im an thankful for the peace-of-mind that comes with living at home and not on my own at the moment and I will see a way through this.
