I've been suffering from social anxiety for 40 years and have had mixed experiences of socialising in the past. I am more ok if someone asks me to join their social group, but I can't make the first move and ask if I can join a group, cos I fear rejection.
I have read plenty of things along the lines of "just do it" and "Don't worry about it, because it won't be as bad as you think", but all my previous experience tells me it will be as bad as I think. How do I get around this catch 22?

Hi Dave
Welcome to the forum!
Therapy helped me a lot with my anxiety. CBT and just general counselling. Talking about what i was frightened of, challenging those thoughts. Having small tasks to do and then reporting back to the therapist about them.
Its not easy but life can improve over time (and effort).

I'm in the same boat, I've really struggled over the years and bad experiences just reinforce my fears.
But no pain no gain, if you don't try you'll never get what you want and as horrible as rejection is, it doesn't really have any significance - where as building friendships does!
Still not easy I'm really struggling to talk to people
