Feeling as if my feelings are all in my head

It’s been a while now that I feel as if all my depression, anxiety etc are all in my head and they are something I have created because I want attention and I want to pity myself. There are times where these thoughts get so bad I start to question everything. My therapist says it’s a form of denial but I’m genuinely convinced I’m exaggerating everything I feel and it’s making me feel very confused and ironically anxious or worried. Can anyone help out/share similar experiences?

It sounds like your inner self does want attention (which isn’t a bad thing at all- sometimes we really need support). Maybe try validating yourself and that you’re struggling. It’s okay to need help. Sometimes we do get comfortable in self-pity and our thoughts spiral making us feel worse, but that doesn’t mean we are the cause of our depression and anxiety. There are many varying factors that go into what causes that. We do have quite a bit of control over how we respond to it and how we attempt to manage it, though.

In what ways do you think you’re exaggerating how you feel?
I just feel as if I’m exaggerating because whenever I have a day where I’m slightly better I start to question whether I had anything in the first place. For example, my anxiety is mainly caused by being outside/around people, not being with my partner, not feeling in control of what is happening and well these days with corona virus I’m at home with my partner so my anxiety is better in many ways and I start to question whether I ever had anxiety or I just forced myself to think I had it because I wanted something to blame my problems for.
