Hello I'm new to this site. I'm struggling with depression, OCD, anxiety and anorexia. I'm also feeling quite isolated and alone without many people to talk to who understand. If anyone on the forum would like to connect to talk I'd appreciate that. I'm always willing to help with other people's issues in any way I can whether it's giving advice or just listening when you need to talk or vent.

:welcome: to the forum, you've made the first important steps by joining us here, but are you getting professional help?
I'm sure if you look around the forum you'll see and find lots of others with similar experiences X

I was not getting professional help for a long time due to issues with the US health care system. But as of the last couple of months I've finally started getting help. Have seen a psychiatrist and am taking fluoxetine and clomipramine.

Sorry to hear you had problems getting help at first, but glad to hear you now are.

Are you doing any self help activities, such as resting baths , meditation, soothing music? For me I find that art and writing helps me to express my feelings x

I find it hard to focus on things but I do find listening to audio books helps.
I'm also trying to write creatively and draw/color more.

I can empathize with that, what audio books are you listening to?

And if you feel like sharing some of your writing that would be really nice X

There are two types of audiobooks I like.
When I want something to engage me I like crime, my favorite author is Michael Connelly. When I want to just relax and feel comforted, I like to listen to favorite books from childhood or "feel good" reads that are gentle and comforting. There is an author called Alexander McCall Smith who writes a series called The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. They are books set in Botswana Africa about a detective but not gritty or gruesome, just amusing. I can relisten to those books many times.

As for creative writing, I used to write stories a lot as a kid, and then i majored in journalism at University. But I got out if the habit of writing and lost my focus. Recently started writing again, and actually started a Facebook page for sharing posts and articles I've written about inspiring people. I'll send you the link if you want.

Thanks but I don't use Facebook, it doesn't help my mental health and to be honest I find most(I'm sure I wouldn't with yours) stuff on there a little bit dull, lots of look at my food and here is me pretending to be happy ...

But if you want to start a thread or join one with writing then I'll happily read X

Sounds like some good books, I listen mostly to Harry potter, Sherlock Holmes, and sci-fi for fiction and have loads of nice books about mindfulness and real science for my factual listening ... Have you heard Ruby Wax book about mindfulness it's really good.x

Hi there and welcome pinscher . We have a journal section where you can write your thoughts down . You may find that part helpful. Or reading what others have written about. It can be about anything, doesn’t have to be MH related all the time.

Urban Hermit - I understand your feelings about Facebook. I stay away from politics, negative moany complaining posts and 'me, me, me' stuff on Facebook. My rule for what I post on Facebook is it should be either positive/happy, or useful/helpful or both. So I post/share a lot of dog rescue advocacy posts, social justice stuff (equality etc) and things that are positive (inspiring art, photos etc). Also I am British but now living in the US so I keep in contact with British friends and family (as well as friends all over the US and world) via Facebook.
Anyway, that's how I use Facebook, but I totally respect your reasons for not wanting to use it. :)

I have read the Harry Potter books and I enjoy the movies. Recently saw the new Fantastic Beasts movie and enjoyed that. I haven't read Sherlock Holmes but my husband has and he and I both like anything to do with Sherlock Holmes (TV series, movies etc). I will look up Ruby's book.

Listening to audiobooks and watching movies are two things I enjoy. Recently I'm trying do things like color or draw (and read and write) to keep myself busy in positive ways.
As I mentioned I'm into dog rescue... I have two dogs and they are the light of my life, they are my babies.
Apart from reading what do you do in terms of positive or helpful hobbies/activities to help you deal with mental health issues?

I'm an artist, so drawing, paintings watercolours, acrylic, oils and sculpture mostly, I've just started knitting... See chill out area for my attempts in the coming weeks.

Writing poems and short stories.

So loads of arts and crafts.

Started to learn some yoga.

Long walks in the country side also help a lot

X

I’ve always wanted to learn to meditate. I’ve tried the headspace app but just can get my mind to empty. I’ve looked up classes in the area but the anxiety stops me from going.

It's not an easy process and it may be worth giving it another go ? I've been trying for months and months and still only get it in brief moments of empty thought ...X
