For those with a fear of flying this web page and the book mentioned may be useful: Overcome Fear of Flying with practical, powerful methods.

Also you could do one of these courses: Virgin Flying Without Fear

I put off flying for 8 years because I was worried about my panic. I have now got over this and these days I have to fly a lot. While I was really scared for my first few flights, each flight I made it got easier.

Another thing which can make your journey a lot easier is to call up the airline's special needs service and tell the that you are very scared of flying and that you'd like special assistance. This way someone from the special assistance service will meet you at the check in area at the airport, they'll take you through all the security and passport controls up to the gate, you will then be able to board the plane before other people and get comfortable on board. The cabin crew on the plane will then come and check on you during the flight to make sure that you're okay

I did this the first few times I flew after not flying for so long and it certainly made those first few flights a lot easier. On the first long haul flight about an hour before we landed the cabin crew even brought me and my wife a glasses of sparkling wine to celebrate that I had made the journey.

It was a trick I learnt when I did the Virgin Flying Without Fear course.

I'm terrified of airports not flying. Its almost a relief to be on the plane and having survived the ordeal of the airport! Its put me off going places a lot but I have a trip to Poland planned this year and I am already panicking.

Hi Calypso,

I'm the same, it's the air security I can't manage to get along with, and I have been like it for years, ever since, what with the problems of 9/11, and I became severely anxious, of air security, I always found it harder to then relax down, for then en flight.

Now? I have a marvellous anti anxiety med drug Pregabalin, that has been a big help. I take 50 ml twice daily.

Also, I wear travel motion sickness bands, in which I once discovered that the nerves of anxieties are kept right down and at bay, owing to the pulsating nerve button.

So I'm in agreement, it's not so much the flying isn't the problem, it's the anxities of getting t hrough and that hopefully, that they won't confiscate anything - at air security which can be the anxiety problems.

i have a trip coming up next month, and I am r eally looking with enjoyment forward to it this time round.

Take care now.
