hi,

have a question and not sure where it sits on these forums.
I am estranged for over 10 years from parents, but want to understand their medical histories - specifically my mother given schzophrenia etc. Now i may need to get my brother to find out who is still kinda in touch but dont want to open up varius cans of worms, but wanted to know if there are other legal means or ways to obtain access to both my parents records

thanks

I don’t think you can because of patient confidentiality and data protection. I wouldn’t like to think that family could access my personal information and I’m sure you wouldn’t want them looking at yours

i understand that, but given the respective hereditary nature of some items, i dont see why there wouldnt be a mechanism around it

If you're in the USA you can't access medical records of anyone even if it's a spouse because of the HIPPA laws.It doesn't matter that there could be potential hereditary illnesses.

Maybe you could talk to your parents about disclosing?

No,I didn't miss it,just suggesting it since that's pretty much your only hope of ever actually seeing any medical records firsthand.Your brother may be able to do some digging but without seeing for yourself you really won't know what's true and what's not.

It doesn't matter whether there may be inherited illnesses, there's no legal way to get access to someone's medical records without their consent.
