Can a schizophrenic ever expect to be accepted by normal society? Normal to me is the vast majority of people who are welcomed and accepted by nearly everyone. I think people with mental illness, especially schizophrenics, are the lowest of the low and rejected by the majority.

We scare people, we are not on the same plane of existence.

People are watching me all the time.

The people at Taco Bell like me, the people at McDonald's don't. The workers at McDonald's go quiet when I walk in the door and stare at me. What bothers me most is that I haven't a clue as to why this is.

Don't expect to be accepted, you'll be rejected.

McDonald's is our kind of place [clap clap]
It’s such a happy place [clap clap]
Hap hap hap happy place [clap clap]
A clean and snappy place
McDonald's is our kind of place [clap clap]
It’s such a happy place
McDonald's is our kind of place!
Your kind of place!

I don't expect people to accept me. I don't really trust people anyway. Except for my mom, because she never gave up on me. But other people worry me. They will always find something to judge. Schizophrenia is so misunderstood so I don't expect them to be open minded about mental illness. It's sad.

There needs to be a lot more acceptance in society.
Did you watch the commercial and sing along with it so you too could be happy? Look at how normal everyone is; the kid, the father, the man behind the counter, they are all happy, and they have a happy song, good food, and a place to park their car. Our problem is we have never done that, so we can't be accepted by society.

You are wrong, CPU. This is one of the rare times I must disagree with you. I've talked about this before, God loves them, he doesn't love us. Society approves of them, they are normal, they get to go to McDonald's and be happy. They have McDonald's in England, you should go to one and try to sing the happy song. If it works, you will be part of the system and contribute to society. You will be alive. The insanity of it all is that I prefer to be dead again and ignored. By that I mean to be homeless and invisible. I was alive then. When I went to a McDonald's, I really scared them back then. I did nothing more than walk in and buy a cheeseburger. Look up Porterville, California, I arrived at that small city homeless. It is a good story, I should tell it sometime.

I think people with mental health issues do get to be accepted... it just happens too frequently, so many people suffer at some stage of their life with depression or anxiety, it is normal to be abnormal.

Schizophrenics have a very tough time of it, no doubt, because of the stigma, and because of confusion and delusion. But that's why we have communities such as this one, where you can come and be who you are, no questions asked.

I think it is the disease, like lepers, we are. Some people like us, most don't. I don't think it is societies fault, there is something wrong with us. This is why I think we will never be accepted.

They make the rules, but I see your point.
i just think it's very ironic to be labelled & considered to be Mad/mentally ill, within a society/culture/system/civilisation as insane & unhealthy as this one.

If we were living in a genuinely thriving, ecologically balanced, sane, healthy, peaceful, humane, & genuinely civilised World, then would we have initially had the same degree of difficulties that we have done? & would the treatments have been the same? i think Not on both counts.

I don't think being nice and accepting me would have solved my problems.

I've said it before on this forum, everyday I wish I could have been normal. I should stop dwelling on it and enjoy Tinker's company.

i think you have vastly overrated 'normal'.

Good environments/experiences & good treatment; being treated well, with respect, dignity, humanity & compassion does greatly impact peoples well being. i wouldn't underestimate all that.

Hi Mark
I just read your post..
I have bpd and feel.the same way...
I think differently to everyone else & behave differently also..
I believe nobody understands me at all and have in fact been told as much on many occasions.
I too believe that I completely stand out everywhere and feel people watch me & talk about how odd I am all the time..
Just thought I would say my piece..
Never understood - never really accepted..

I don't even fit in with the mentally ill. I am too happy to be continually sad, and too sad to be continually happy, too sane not to see the craziness, too spiritual to be religious, too disenfranchised to eat at a franchise.

They don't call a place that serves murdered, chemically and hormonally marinated dead mammal meat, the "Golden Arches" for nothing.

No, it is more than that. The Golden Arches are for the faithful. Ronald McDonald has taken over the world.

Do you truly believe there is something wrong with us? That sounds a lot like what you're saying 'normal' people think of us.

I think our brains are protecting us from something, kicking in to relieve us of pain. Unfortunately creating what others may see as strange or weird.
