Hi all! Newbie here to the forums. :)

My wife has suffered for years (been married for 40) with BiPolar disorder/depression. The worst episode began in 2003 with a full blown freak out and first psych ward stay. Since then (past 15 years), it's been several hospital stays (maybe a couple years off), many different pdocs/counselors/etc. Last year, two in-patient psych ward stays. This year is the worst....total depression, suicidal thoughts, insomnia, etc.

So ...... here we are today .... with a recommendation of Electroconvulsive therapy, starting next Friday.

Just wanted to know if there are any members here who have experienced Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), how it went, was it helpful and just any thoughts or stories? Drug therapy (and I mean LOTS of different drugs) haven't helped.

I haven’t experienced it myself, but I have a friend of a friend who had electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). He had it for depression, and was helped by it, in that he felt less depressed and more cheerful afterwards. He does have problems with his memory now though, that he didn’t have before...

Thank you for your input, K. She is apprehensive about the treatment, especially since one of her sisters keeps filling her head with nonsense about it. But, the sister never offers up Any help otherwise. I may have to block her number as all she does is get my wife upset by saying things like "oh, you don't need that" or "Just think happy thoughts".

I want electro convulsive therapy. But my psychiatrist says no. No amount of talk therapy or medication helps me. I'm worse then before after talk therapy. I hope that if your wife gets it it helps her. :welcome: to the forum. You will find lots of support here. Please keep us updated on the situation.

Maybe it's my therapist? But this is about you and your wife not me.

I had 8 sessions of ects 2 years ago. I was hospitalized due to bipolar mania. I stayed
about a month in the hospital and the doctors decided after 10 days of stay that all the
medications I was given didn't work at all...So they decided without even asking me
that I should undergo Ects. They initially planned 10 sessions, but after the 8th session
they decided to stop since I was doing much better. the only negative side effect I an
recall is that I could not remember my name after I woke up from the anesthesia...lol
