Does NHS treat a bout of depression different to Chronic long term depression?

They don't seem to understand the difference. If you are not a short-term fix they make you feel bad for taking up services. They do their best to avoid you using their services, unless you are about to cause harm to yourself.

Surely long term chronic depression usually without cause should be treated differently to someone who experiences short-term depression usually caused by something

A couple of quotes that really annoy me and make me feel like they don't understand depression as a long term issue

"It's OK not to be OK"

No, it really isn't. It's shit not being OK

"1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England"

Just makes me think they are saying everyone gets down, get over it. Yes many people will get down, suffer depression or maybe grieve... They may benefit from therapy or medication but how many wake up every day for decades on end wishing they were dead, hating themselves - surely they need to recognise the difference between a bout of depression and never-ending chronic depression

I understand your point.

I have gone on to realise new things though, as a pro as this depression thing and the way the NHS works.

The GP will refer you to the CMHT if you are in crisis. My GP told me that she doesn't do mental health. She made it very clear, but if i don't bother her too much, she is very good. She has become more laid back the older she has got and is more patient with me.

There are psychologists, counsellors or peer support groups. Wellbeing services. Samaritans. There is a lot out there for the long term mentally ill.

I realised that most support is to keep us out of hospital or get us back to work. The inbetweeners have to find their own way. There used to be so much more, art groups and free craft groups but now they are all work focused so i am left with nothing either.

What do you need help with? We might be better use than a GP!

And it is not ok that you don't feel ok. Depression is not ok. I think acceptance of our brain problems is important but it is certainly not ok we have them.

1 in 4, i think that is so people don't feel alone.

I personally think saying 1 in 4 people go through what i go through is invalidating.

@Tawny I agree. There's a difference between a bout of the blues but long lasting depression is the long haul struggle.

It's not about what I need, like you I am a seasoned pro. I'm going back to the specialist team (the same team that keep dropping me and talk me they don't see the point in seeing me) for a medication review - even though I was clear about the anti-depressant not working before they discharged me from their services last time. I'm on lithium and they don't even monitor, my last blood test was August so much for every 3 months.

I just feel they try to make you feel small and try to tell you everyone feels this way and try to dismiss you.

My GP just tends to say Oh I can't do much I'll just refer you. Not sure how they expect you to feel you have support
