Do most of our issues have roots in childhood?

Seems to me that many problems really began a long time ago. A time I can't recall much of. You know, as a kid you just do what you can to cope. And you have lots of fun too. You have no idea how insidious the experiences of home life can be. How they seem to creep into your bones and remain there long after childhood is over.

And how you're still stuck with the stuff you learned long ago. You had to have those strategies to cope. They were adaptive and useful as a kid. Now they don't really help anymore, but they're like reflex responses because you used them every day for the first two decades of your life.

Now those old responses might even be a source of illness. They helped you survive childhood. Now they might be slowly killing you.

Its my experience most people who develop mental issues have them stemming from childhood issues unless its caused by a trauma late in life or a psychotic break.

It's been the other way for me.

I had a happy, care-free childhood.

Adulthood has been much more difficult.

I absolutely think my issues stem from the formative years of childhood and adolescence. I think I've had the same character traits since very early on. And it seems pretty clear to me how they stem from my parents 'issues' (Phillip Larkin was absolutely spot on, including as to how their issues were caused in turn by _their_ parents, or at least by the circumstances of their formative years, e.g. the effects of the two world wars).

Plus though, there's a portion caused directly by biological things (that also go back to childhood or before).

Seems as if such things suddenly become harder to manage once you hit puberty though.

Yep - had a horrible and traumatic childhood and most of the issues I have stem from that.
