I always thought that people who hear voices
actually hear them physically

but from reading the forum tonight
I see some people hear voices that manifest as thoughts
either someone elses thoughts
or a voice pretending to be their own thoughts

when I'm in a bad way
I get really persistent thought about not wanting to live
( which I have never acted on )
or wanting to harm myself ( which I have stopped acting on )
and other annoying repetitive things

its the persistence and repetition of those messages
that might be a voice

im not sure if its a voice or not

Hi Zoe 1 Perhaps the most important thing is not what you call your experiences but the harm they are doing to you mentally.Anythiing that seems like a voice must be frightening and unsettling to you. Are you on any medication at the moment?

It's my firm belief that we all have at least one voice within us (see avatar), most of the time they're good and we never notice them and they help us make decisions in life, sometimes they're bad and try to get us to harm ourselves in some way or try to mess with our sense of reality (psychosis).

Since becoming a fully fledged voice hearer I can recognise times in my life when my voice was doing the thinking for me, making me feel those thoughts were mine long before I turned 36 and started hearing mine as a separate entity. Mostly while on recreational drugs I would have thoughts and fantasies that turned out to be my voice having fun on his own, now that I know him better it's easy to spot his influence over me during my life.

One such fantasy I don't mind sharing is this, whenever I heard a great song I would imagine myself back in music class at school writing and performing that song for the rest of the class, a fantasy I no longer have myself but my voice still often has it whenever he hears a song on the radio and he conveys this fantasy to me via images in my mind and through talking. He also has fantasies of going back in time to various periods and interacting with people and has fantasies about being me and talking to people I know or will meet in the future and holds sometimes lengthy conversations with them until he stops himself, anything to escape the reality he's facing now.

thankyou all thats very helpful

yes I am on antipsychotic medication
which has helped alot

I never saw it as voices
because it sounds like my own thoughts
and I do not hear it audibly

but given the persistent repetitions of thoughts some days
it might well be a voice

I have been turned away from a hearing voices group before
because I did not hear them audibly

Ahh well on that note, Hi Zoe, then you are suffering with Paranoia, as you are suffering externally, and you are not hearing voices internally within you.

I suggest that you make a GP booking, and mention to them, this will be the best way forward and we here at MHF, as you might be fully aware cannot diagnose you. As you know yourself, from there at the GPs, they will if they can't help you further, they will refer you to community mental health team, and you might be able to have a further assessment, and further medication drawn up.

Oh and try listening to music, you only need 1 disc in the walkman, and headphones, you don't need to carry so much music with you, and listening to small doses of music, will help, belive me.

Best regards.

Yeah Zoe, definitely the best way to deal with it, is to talk and share about it.

well ive taken it to the right place I think with my step mother
I find its best not to put all your eggs in one basket
even with my therapist she is not always the right person
for every single issue

I would be uncomfortable with a therapist because of money exchanging hands. BUT I have not tried one, so IDK for sure.

It's strange. My local NHS offer free therapy for mental health disorders BUT not for serious ones. So I was excluded. It's baffling.

Hi Zoe,

This is the reason why, I've recommended you to go back to your GP, and seek a referral back to your community mental health team. As I suggest, they would then get assessments, done, and help to draw up the right kind of medication.

Well, maybe your dose needs to be increased , perhaps? It is an idea of a thought.

Best regards.
