I won't lie to you guys, this has been a problem for some time now, I just don't feel at ease around people. I used to be quite popular in all honesty, and always had a crowd of people around me, but now I feel like I am being fake when I make people laugh. I am in a constant struggle with myself to be my natural self, and I'm not even really quite sure who the real me is. Now this may very well be a teen issue, but as you can probably imagine, it causes hell on Earth for me. Hell I'd trade in my virginity 'til I'm 40 to be open and at ease with myself, and to know who I am.

I often find it near on impossible to say things that pop into my head, though naturally, I used to say everything that I thought of (had a stream-of-consciousness personality, I think that's the term), if I even try to, my mind just blanks out. I also think everyone is looking at me, or is going to start talking to me, and it makes me feel really uneasy, I always feel like I'm in the spotlight, though I used to be comfortable with that feeling and even enjoy it. Last of all, I find it hard to show happiness or laugh truly, especially with my family, whom I always act moody around.

I am 17 by the way.

Are these things typical of a certain condition? The GP would be my last resort, as I could never tell my parents about how I feel, and going alone isn't possible at the moment.

Hey I feel for you although no one here is a prof so can only offer advice and maybe mine would be the same to go and talk to your doctor about it - why don;t you think you can go on your own?

Why don;t you write some of your thoughts down see if that helps

well thats the million £ question, the things you are feeling could be alot of stuff, sadly nothing fits nicely into a box and most of the time if you look those symptoms up you will find you belong everywhere.

by going to the GP you dont need to tell your parents. your 17, so could you go with a friend, or write down what you are feeling/going through and let them diagnose you?

I can really relate to this...I think what I have a social anxiety. I get really panicky if anyone starts talking to me, and i think about what im gonna say wayy to much so it either comes out all wrong or i just say nothing because im too nervous.

I too have trouble being normal infront of my family, I just act really moody or quiet, I dont know why I just feel uncomfortable...like my personality has disapeared

Ive been like this since I was 14 and Im now 20...the best thing to do really is go to your doctor for help because ignoring it wont make it any better, I feel like i've wasted too much time ignoring my problem...

hope you get the help you need :)

You really need to go to someone who is a professional, please don't self diagnose, few people are able to be objective when they self diagnose.

Your GP will be used too seeing people with these kinds of problems and will want to help.

Im suffering the exact same

IM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. Please dont think that your alone on this. I've been having this problem for the last 10 years. I find myself avoiding large groups and being really nervous and anxious when people are talking to me. It comes across very fake as i usually become guarded and fink to much about what to say. Some situtations i say the most sillest thing and it never makes sense. i guess i say it cause i feel i have to say something.

Im sorry to say that i cant tell you what it is you have. This for me is just one of my problems and im awaiting to see a specialist at the minute. Please dont leave it this late to get it treated as i have. Please see your GP and try to explain to them the best you can. But please feel free to message me anytime if u want to chat about it

Hi - again not a professional myself so diagnosis can't be made on internet. Seems like you got a few things going on there. Like everyone has said talk to GP. If you feel shy going in there ask if they can telephone you. They can do that. Try calling NHS direct?

A good starter for you to build some confidence if afraid of GP woudl be maybe to call a mentle health charity like MIND. http://www.mind.org.uk/

If you call there support line even though they won't confirm anydiagnosis you tell them your symtoms and then without making a disgnosis tey can send you info on those symptoms they think you may have to give you some info etc. Its annonmous. You may feel more confident about going to doctor after that.

I used to suffer from social anxiety and never did anything about it. but without making a diagnosis some of your symptoms (and PortsmouBFG) seem to be in that area as past sufferer.

Have a look at this chairty wesbite for social anxiety and if you feel parts of it describe yo uthen that woud be a starter. They have a support line also and obviously specialise in speaking to people soem of whome are afriad to talk to anyone or even pick up the phone so you can feel at ease there.

http://www.social-anxiety.org.uk/

Read through and you can get some good info and hope. As I said may be a few more issues ging on there so you need a professional opinion and GP best pace to start that route. Better to knock these problems on the head early.
