Sounds like he's not housebroken. Do you want a dog, or a person?
My meaning was, if your concern is how to make another person become what you want them to be, then you're running a training exercise. If, on the other hand, your intention is to engage in a wonderful process of discovery of who another person actually is, and support them in becoming what they want to be, that's called a relationship. Which do you want?

Honestly, even with BPD and serious abandonment issues of my own...

I won't stay with anybody that plays hot and cold, for any reason. If you can't control yourself enough to at least be consistent, I'm done. It's not worth my sanity to indulge somebody else's disorder.
