Creativity and Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders Across the Arts and Sciences

Researchers agree that mental illness is neither necessary nor sufficient for creativity. But is there still a significant link between the two?

The oft-cited studies by Jamison (1989), Andreasen (1987), and Ludwig (1995) showing a link between mental illness and creativity have been criticized on the grounds that they involve small, highly specialized samples with weak and inconsistent methodologies and a strong dependence on subjective and anecdotal accounts (Schlesinger, 2009).

To be sure, research does show that many eminent creators—particularly in the arts—had harsh early life experiences (such as social rejection, parental loss, or physical disability) and mental, and emotional instability (Ludwig, 1995, 1998; Simonton, 1994). However, this does not mean that mental illness was a contributing factor to their eminence. There are many eminent people without mental illness or harsh early life experiences, and there is very little evidence suggesting that clinical, debilitating mental illness is conducive to productivity and innovation.

What's more, only a few of us ever reach eminence. Beghetto and Kaufman (2007) argue that we can display creativity in many different ways, from the creativity inherent in the learning process (“mini-c”), to everyday forms of creativity (“little-c”) to professional- level expertise in any creative endeavor (“Pro-c”), to eminent creativity (“Big-C”).

That statement pinpoints the elitist attitude applied to society by society from the top educating elite right down to the working class man in a bar, it's ubiquitous and universal and can be observed everywhere, even on this forum.................Instead you have to strive forward and ignore society's self regulating critics and do what you enjoy, without comparison or seeking praise or adulation, but simply because it's personally healthy and beneficial for you and gives you a sense of well being.

Gute Nacht :)

& yet i'd have you down as a conformist. Regardless of what you really think - we are contorted to fit the consensus, & you defend that, same as the majority do.

They are trying to use eminence as a measure for creative ability - but we know that it is not.
Which means that, since there is no objective scale of creativity then there can never be a definitive study that says whether schizophrenics (or other madmen) are more creative.

The markets for the arts are all elite entities. Only so many rich patrons of the arts so that limits the top end. Even music is returning to form via live venues for the rich, and those very expensive boxed sets. That's natural I guess. No issue with rich people - not a socialist these days, and some have earned their wealth. And art shouldn't be free and flat and public. Ultimately the crowd-sourced art is the lowest common denominator or worse still a Swastika/Hammer&Sickle. What you need is enough regulation and room for small fish to thrive too. Outsider art. And stuff. Money from lottery funding should be invested in small galleries and stuff like that. Taxation would be accepted if money raised is spent intelligently and explained. Not a total capitalist where everything of value should rise to the top.
