We're conditioned to believe that we should be happy or depressed based on our circumstances. This is definitely self defeating in that if we treat it as fact it can make us depressed. It also creates a sense of lack if we don't have something which we believe will make us happy.

Studies on the amgydala (flight of fight part of brain) show that the amygdala grows in rats exposed to prolonged stressors in the lab. These rats when then put back into the same circumstances as before were still anxious and the amygdala stayed the same size. Again in a meditation study with humans the amygdala shrunk and when returned to their previous lives/circumstances they all reported decreased levels of stress, so it's their reaction to their circumstances and not the actual circumstances which are important.

Guess my point is to take a step back from negative thoughts about your circumstances. There is hope. Our brains are neuroplastic and can be changed. Meditation, mindfulness and learning to question our thoughts and ingrained belief systems can achieve this.

Thanks for this post.
I totally get the whole being stressed out in seemingly normal circumstances due to the anxiety being so deeply ingrained.
But it's good to remember it can work the other way.
