I try to read these threads or something else and half way through I can't read it .... it is very difficult for me to concentrate. Not been able to concentrate properly since being ill.

Any ideas on how you can make yourself concentrate better?

The thing is to focus only on specific things at a time. We have to increasingly multi task in this day & age. It can have the effect of a lack of focus. Meditation is very good for focusing & stilling the mind. The mind is a tool. If I want to focus on something I try to exclude all other things out & re read & read slowly. Just looking at single stuff.

I can't be bothered reading every thread & every post on every forum I go on - & I would not have time; I filter stuff out & use discernment. I scan read & sift stuff. If I find something of interest; only then do I selectively apply myself to it.

In surfing the web & living in this age of information - So much of it is utter rubbish - I'd say over 99% of it is; So much of it is miss & diss information. I have been able more & more to switch off from it.

One method that might help!

Hi guys and gals,

I'm new to this forum, and any forum in general, and this is my first message. But I'm not new to Schizophrenia (although that's by the by).

I find a great way of improving concentration is something as simple as listening to music.

When I was first ill I used to listen to a shed load of music. I could listen for hours. To many different genres, and many artists within those genres.

There is a lot of music out there, but for me I found that well produced, both new and old, rich sounding music, would keep me wanting to find and hear more music, that was well produced holding a rich sound.

It was also a great hobby, researching artists and finding out about the meanings of the songs. You'll learn a lot.

There might be a track you don't particularily like on your first few listens, but stick with it. And always make sure you listen to the whole track! That itself will help concentration and give you some discipline.

Of course though don't play the music too loud if you're at home with others. What you want to listen to and what the others around you don't want to listen to, are two different things, so be considerate.

If you're not so sure about what I've written (from my experiences), please Google music helping to improve concentration, and you should find positive articles which will backup this message.

Good luck.

During the time of illness I find it difficult to concentrate and comprehend the stuff that I'm reading, I haven't read fiction in depth for years.
Most of my books are non-fiction as I find it easier to 'dip in' every now and again and read and take in short pieces.
I too find that I can listen to music for longer amounts of time, but I am not always too aware of the lyrics, more the sound.
I also find it easier to read a magazine of interest in short bursts. I too scan for relevance or interest.

I too am not so great listening to the lyrics, I find it difficult to even understand what most singers are saying!!! But the overall sound is what impresses me (which is why I like to listen to rich well produced music).

I find though that my concentration can be poor if I'm doing something I'm not intesrested in, or if I've drank too much tea or coffee!!

Or if I'm shopping! My mind is too easily distracted in the chaos of public spaces after a long stint of shopping - with all the stimulation of my senses - hense I don't like shopping and tend to spend an hour tops when shopping. It's like a mad dash to buy everything and get the heck out of there before my brain emplodes!!!

one psychiatrist said any long term concentration is out of the question, so at one point i picked up a series of 5 300 page books and read them in 16hrs.

Nowadays it takes a while to read a book, i only do it in 1hr bursts, theres always other things to do, my concentration span is more comfortable with 45mins tv programmes than 3hr films on dvd

I have heard it said a lot of people nowadays are into short things, wagners ring cycle now doesn't fit it's audience

I really struggle to concentrate long enough to watch a DVD.I did manage to watch 'The Reader' the other day though.I sometimes wonder wether my concentration is poor or wether as I get older I'm getting picky about what is worth concentrating on.Modern films do my head in generally.

If your constantly been attacked, you become on your guard, it's hard to make yourself concentrate on a point, selective attention

Thats what psychiatrists don't understand, i was totally relaxed reading a book when this thug knocked on the door been relaxed i let him in and got beaten up, these areas are like that, psychiatrist are paid good wages to get mortgages in decent areas and not understand

I don't feel i can guarantee a few hrs undisturbed were i live, i'm reluctant to watch dvds becaus i know half way through theres going to be some form of trouble outside
