Caffeine and anxiety

I suspect caffeine is making my anxiety disorder worse.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant.

There's evidence that quitting caffeine can be even more beneficial for anxiety than taking prescription anti-anxiety drugs.

With age I think I've developed sensitivity to it.

No coffee for me starting in the morning....I'm curious to see how I'll feel.

I've never been able to drink coffee unless it's decaf cuz it makes me shake and feel sick and really anxious. I hope it works out :)

I genuinley do suffer with anxiety problems, so I need to take my new method of med, Pregabalin, on daily basis. However, also, I don't have caffeine as such no more. I am trialing at the moment, from a health and beauty store chain, a healthier and for a kick, cola drink. Mind you, a staggering amount of salt in, then, mother feels it a relatively low amoutn of salt, in the drink.

If you think giving up coffee will improve your anxiety, then you should definitely go for it!

This is day 2 without consuming any coffee. I have a headache and some brain fog but I was expecting withdrawal symptoms....my anxiety seems to be less than usual.

I've noticed that when I drink caffeinated tea - just the one in a day - I'm more likely to develop my over-breathing issue than when I have decaff. It's the same with rich chocolate, as it has a higher cocoa content and thus more caffeine than cheap milk chocolate. I only have one decaff tea a day now, which is a touch frustrating because I'd like to have 2-3 cups a day but keeping my anxiety issues at bay has to take priority

Hi Michelle, again,

I am just wondering, whether if you would benefit, to contact your GP, and if they specialise with mental h ealth, for an anti anxiety med to be drawn up, I take myself, and my anti anxiety med helps me out a great deal, which I benefit from.

Best wishes.

I'm not too bad at the moment with my anxiety, though I still have my moments, especially at work. If it got worse, it'd certainly see a doctor. What helps me is spending time doing my hobbies and going for a daily walk - it clears my head more often than not.

My one time Dr always encouraged me to get off caffeine. It does makes anxiety worse.

I kicked it after trying for 3 years. I'm now totally off of caffeine.

I personally prefer to stay off medicine because I believe taking medicine can teach your body that it doesn't need to produce the chemicals the medicine gives you (e.g. the use of sleeping drugs will lower the rate at which your body produces melotonin.)

I know it isnt' possible for everyone to live without meds, but I think it's worth trying without them and trying to learn natural ways to deal with the anxiety.

P.s. I don't want you to think I'm trying to tell you off or anything, I'm not I just wanted to mention my opinion for the sake of discussion :)

The headache is caused by the caffiene withdrawal. I've experienced it before . . . headache eventually goes away. I've had doctors recommend to me to decrease / stop caffiene to help with my anxiety.

The headache is gone but the brain fog remains. It's like the coffee was able to clear the cobwebs in my head. I'm struggling a little with concentration. I'm doing okay though and I'm glad I chose this path.

Exactly! I discovered this after years of abusing coffee consumption.

One of the first things my doctor asked me when I complained of anxiety was how much coffee I consumed per day. I have tried to stop coffee a few times, replacing it with juices and teas, but I always end up drinking it again.

I can notice some relief from the anxiety, but the lack of coffee usually gives me a bit of a headache. I hope you have good results from your experience!

When I give up caffeine my anxiety is so much better, but then I get cocky and think one won’t hurt, end up having 3 and back I go on that merry-go-round 🎠
