Brain blocker - need help!

Hi, my daughter has a depression for three years now. She is currently on duloxetine. She often has headache, stomachaches, and low energy, and other physical symptoms as well. She is an intelligent girl. However, recently she lost the ability to do anything. For example, even watching youtube entertainment videos, she cannot concentrate for more than 3 minutes. This makes it impossible for her to catch up with the heavy school load. She told me that her mental barriers block her from doing anything. I am not sure what is the root cause of her issues and what professional we should seek for help. Does anyone have any similar experience or have any suggestions? We would super appreciate for any advice!

hi hopeful :welcome:

you need to feed all that back to the psychiatrist
to see if she has the right medication
and whether she needs some talking therapy as well

I have blocks sometimes and have had to learn
how to self talk to raise my confidence
as I have some unhelpful thinking patterns

it doesn't have to go on as it is

I would have her seek therapy drugs just mask over the problem .They are necessary in the short term if the person is in danger of hurting themselves . In the long term therapy is the answer you can do positive affirmations with her to help change her beliefs they help .

Thanks for the replies. I think the problem is more than just her thoughts or briefs which blocks her ability to do things. There are deeper issues which blocks her to do anything. She is seeing a DBT coach weekly for the past few years but it didn't help much. For therapy drugs, I am not familiar with that. Can you tell a little bit more of it? Thanks very much!

Hello Hopeful. Welcome to the forum. When a person is depressed it is very difficult for them to concentrate or focus on anything. It could be your daughters depression is the reason she is unable to do that.

I read Duloxetine is best taken with food. If your daughter is taking it on an empty stomach then this could explain her stomach pain. If she has taken this for more then 6 weeks and it does not seem to be lifting her depression at all, I would ask to try another anti depressant. There are many out there and different ones work for different people. It can take time to find the right one.

As for therapy, I would find a therapist that specialises in depression. I believe therapy is very helpful for getting to the root of depression.
