Bipolar with mania VS Brief Psychotic Disorder

Hi all,

I have recently been diagnosed with bipolar with mania. I have had two episodes of psychotic breaks, one in 2013 and one on 12/24/2017. I have been trying to better understand bipolar with mania by researching through credible resources (mostly the DSM), and I truly feel that Brief Psychotic Disorder better describes my experiences. So my question for everyone with bipolar and mania is: How long do your manic episodes last and can you please describe what your episode is like? The first time I had mine, I was mostly just scared because I had racing thoughts and was highly confused. I have never gone through emotional highs and lows throughout this and my episodes have both lasted for a few days. Can anyone shed light on this? Also, how do talk to your doctors if you think you have been misdiagnosed?

Manias can really vary, in my experience. Most of mine start out with lots of increased energy, positivity, confidence and lack of sleep. They can then turn into paranoia, psychosis, euphoria or panic.

Other signs it might be a mania:

- talking very fast
- fixation with a particular subject to the point of obsession
- risk taking behavior which is out of character
- bursts of creativity
- an increase in drive and motivation
- a feeling like you've discovered something of life changing importance, whether good or bad
- racing thoughts

I would just make an appt. with your Dr and ask them exactly what you said on here. "Could it be something else, like a brief psychosis?"

I am diagnosed with bipolar and mania is what gives it the name Bi-polar, so you are diagnosed by the mania not the depression alone. I also had psychotic breaks which terrified me leading me at one time to sleep on the sofa with aknife in case a "man" (who I now know didn't exist) attacked me. I could see and hear him and once felt his hands on me. It was terrifying. I am balanced now and hope I never have to experience that type of thing again. I had other episodes with other symptoms.

All the best with you. I know many people don't like medication but I wouldn't be without it personally. It keeps me sane.
