I have never thought about this relationship as a couple of enablers but lately I’ve been seeing us with different views. My boyfriend embraces my eating disorder and I accept him and his mood swings. I tend to overbuy food as my coping mechanism and he’s now suffering from binge eating and one of the things I know make him depressed is his sudden weight gain.

I can’t stop myself from overbuying food, he won’t accept help to lose weight and know it’s bothering him. I know the bipolar side of him makes him seek comfort on anything on down moments, including food.

Yesterday he was having a down moment and consequently the rejection set me off to purge and exercise double, as well self harming.

The more I see Him eat, the more I want food out of my own body.

At first I thought our relationship was perfect because we both accept each other’s “crazy” but now I’m starting to feel neglected and I feel like I’m going on a downward spiral. Is there room for only one at a time? Do we take turns on the down moments? Do we do each other more harm than good by being so accepting?

accepting destructive behaviours isn't love if you let it carry on, you should both be encouraging one another to get help and get better

You are obviously in love but need independent help for your conditions. I think it can become destructive as you are finding it. Can you get separate help? There is always Relate who are a site that helps people with relationship problems. Might be worth a look. Its on

Thank you for this link. It’s super helpful. Unfortunately we live in a country where this type of help is seen as whiny people problems and no specialists hence seeking online help 😢
