Bipolar and anger

Hi, I'm new here. I wondered if anyone else suffers from irritability and anger in a prolonged hypomanic or mixed episode? I read once that 30 per cent of bipolar sufferers do. From my point of view, this is the worst symptom I have to deal with, as it affects others as well as myself and is impossible to mask. (I can mask depression and most other hypomanic symptoms.)

I would dearly love to get a handle on this symptom, but if I am hypomanic for more than a couple of weeks (as I have been lately), it always turns nasty and the elation turns into extreme irritability (or agitation as it's called clinically.)

I would like to hear from anyone else who struggles with this, particularly if you have found something to help. I use self-help techniques including meditation and yoga, but when episodic, they don't seem to help much. Thanks in advance for any insights you can give.

Yes definitely I get very angry and agitated when in an up state. For me my antipsychotic medication, Zyprexa, has helped make anger much more manageable. It certainly isn't a cure but it feels close.

Excercise will also almost certainly work if you decide to go the natural route.

Thank you, Blue Fox, that's very helpful - and nice to know I'm not alone in experiencing this.

Hi i want to know how long doesnit take for the medication whether Zyprexa, Resperidone or Abilify to work typically. My daughter diagnosed with Bipolar⁰ w/ psychosis can be hypomania, agitated, sleeplessness with the voices, the side effects for all of them are tremendous very scary. She was taking the lowest dose of risperdone then to 1mg, then changed to abilify then zyprexa 10mg has anyone had the med changed within a short time cause you did not feel it was working?

Hi G.K.
Irritability is a problem for sure. I've still not figured out if it's because I'm just in a bad mood within the Bipolar aspect, or if I'm feeling like others are too slow, or incompetent, or too ignorant or stupid, as an extended response due to the mood change, or whether they genuinely are these things. That's how it usually comes out anyway. Whether they are these things or whether it's just dictated by the mood change, I really don't know, I don't quite have the insight in those moments to know for sure. I only really notice the mood once I've already snapped at people a few times so it's always a case of the horse has already bolted. I do have PRN meds to take at these times and find that Risperidone works fairly well for me, but it does make you tired. If I'm in a phase of irritability, i.e, I'm fairly sure I will be that way tomorrow, then taking a Risperidone before bed helps with sleep and helps the next day too. That's important for me because if my sleep goes out the window, my mood goes out the window and then some. There are lots of other things I probably could do, but I find it difficult to spot the signs and to get motivated to act too.

Irritability is an issue in mania for me too.
The way it manifests itself is becoming short tempered and disagreeable with things that bother me, especially people and situations. I haven’t managed it yet because I have not had insight into my condition until recently. But I do understand what you are talking about. Things I have done and said when irritated in mania have been very regrettable and embarrassing to me after the fact. xo, j
