Bipolar and amphetamines HELP

Hey guys
So im a 28 year old man I'm bipolar 1 im medicated but have been abusing amphetamines for the better part of a year anyone dealt with this and come out the other end? Because its starting to feel like there's no hope

Are you abusing prescription amphetamines like adderall or illegal ones? I’ve had experiences with both- at times I used to abuse my adderall. I’ve been on it so long I can take a high dose and then go take a nap so it takes a lot for me to actually feel it. I’ve been really good about it lately though and taking it as prescribed. If you’re talking about meth I have experience with that too- that’s a hard one to kick, all I can say about that is that the longer you go without it the better the depression gets.

Dude, bipolar and meth are a terrible combo. You need to talk to a doctor to discuss how to get off the meth. Seriously.

I think it is best that you seek help with your substance abuse problems. Substance abuse issues are all too common amongst bipolar people. Its a vicious cycle or your mental health being unstable > Self medicating with drugs> Mental health becomes more unstable>Self medicate with more drugs. I have experienced this myself; when I was depressed I would constantly slef medicate with cannabis. It would alleviate my depression in the short run, but long term it would just push me deeper and deeper into it and nearly drove me to psychosis.

Your first point of contact should be your psychiatrist, they are no stranger to dealing with substance abuse issues as it is an all too common comorbidity in bipolar disorder. You should also consult with your GP and they can offer you advice and support and perhaps a referral to a rehab centre or a community support treatment, if you feel like you may benefit from it. They may also prescribe you medications which might ease your withdrawal process. I'm not exactly sure what the procedure is in Australia, but I would assume that it would be somewhat similar to the UK.

Hey Marly,

I'm Bipolar II and have also had an amphetamine addiction. I'm currently on Naltrexone 50mg for cravings and its really helped a lot. I know that when you're downing it feels like the world is falling apart. But, things do get better! Like other people have mentioned, its a really good idea to reach out for support. While its possible to stay clean alone, it is so much easier and more productive when you have support. Just know that you're not alone and there are resources out there for you!

Whilst this is a common experience I would not say this is fundamentally true. Its vital to take a holistic approach when it comes to treating mental health disorders. This means seeking professional help for associated substance abuse problems. You strive to be honest and transparent with your psychiatrist such that you receive the care that is appropriate for you. It is however, important how you phrase and express your struggles, making it clear that you have a mental health disorder which is compounded by substance abuse. Timing is vital as well, strike whilst the iron is hot so that they do not later on feel deceived by you in any way.

You'll thank me in the long run, rather than applying patchwork solutions

Hey guys thanks for getting back to me just to be clear it's crystal meth and I've tapered my usage to almost none but am just struggling to find meaning in my life so that I can finally kick it for good my psychiatrist knows and I have been referred to drug and alcohol specialists was just looking for peer support and some inspiration also to know im not alone because f#@k me bipolar is lonely.

IT's awesome you have your doctor involved, and support figured out.

Never tried meth, so I don't know what the after-effects are like, but if it's anything at all like coke after it wears off -coming off may involve depression or anxiety. Keep telling yourself it will pass.

I quit an opiate addiction 15 years ago, cold turkey - which is a terrible idea, btw. MAke certain you get enough fluids and eat, dude. Do what you can to minimize the physical discomforts.

Let us know how things are working out for you.
