Hello, I am recovered after 2 hard maniac episodes and I was wondering if is safe to comsume alcohol moderately? As long as I take my meds (lytium). How about Marijuana? I read Conflicting arguments about smoking pot as a bipolar.

alcohol in moderation (like 1-2 drinks a day at most) should be ok. However it seems marijuana in any amount is risky since it can trigger mania in some people with bipolar. The data on this is pretty new but as more studies are done on this, the more it seems to confirm this.

Alcohol presents a special danger: we can use it to delude ourselves that we're self-treating. I did that before I was diagnosed. I started drinking way too much every day and had to quit.

Marijuana makes pdocs freak out. Mine thinks it will make us psychotic. I hate being stoned, so it's an easy choice for me. Makes my thoughts jumble up in an unpleasant way. Odd, since I like the thought jumbling from booze and the hallucinations I had when I got IV Ketamine treatments.

I guess you have to see what works for you.

I'm living with a collection of conditions including Bipolar 1, ADHD, and a bunch of other alphabet soup disorders (SAD, GAD, MDD, etc.) and I use medical marijuana (on the advice of my pdoc as a matter of fact). I've had no dire side effects and some very positive results; I think that, like every other medication, either it works or it don't. Everyone is different.

I'll look into what effects it has in combination with Lithium...

"About 20% of patients with BD have cannabis use disorder at some point in their life. Cannabis use disorder is associated with younger age, manic/mixed episode polarity, presence of psychotic features, and comorbid nicotine dependence, alcohol use disorder, and other SUDs [substance use disorders]. Cannabis use is also associated with more time in affective episodes and rapid cycling.
There is limited research into treatment options for this frequent SUD. Lithium and/or divalproex have level 3 evidence."

"A combination of divalproex and lithium is the only treatment for alcohol use disorder comorbid with BD that meets criteria for level 2 evidence. In a small RCT, there was a significant reduction in the number of drinks per drinking day, as well as per heavy drinking day, in the combination group compared to the group with lithium alone when adherence to treatment was added as a covariate. There is only level 3 evidence for lamotrigine, and divalproex monotherapy or add‐on. While lithium may also show some benefits (level 3), it has to be used with caution in heavy drinkers because of potential electrolyte imbalance."

The alcohol one is obviously about heavy drinking rather than moderate drinking but I always found it better to not drink as my brain doesn't seem to know what moderate means, I don't know how yours is in this regard. Most of us here will know that alcohol doesn't help, although we think it helps at the time, you do feel more clean and balanced when you've not had any for a while. If you think about what it does it terms of stimulating initially and then being a depressant in larger quantities; the effects it has on sleeping and eating; it is also upsetting the body clock and any balance that you may have had, all things you want to be fighting for, not against. It's also going to dehydrate you, which may effect Lithium levels, so you may find the effectiveness of your medication going up and down as well. In short, it's probably best you avoid both.

Alcohol and drugs disrupt neurotransmitters (NT's). Bipolar does the same, so you'll double loaded with disruptions. This may impact the cycle, more and worse episodes. You can also develop rapid cycling without normal moments / or psychosis . (the risk with cannabis is high - very high)

If not be carefully management with this disorder, you are at risk. It's good you first informed before doing things that may put the future on risk.

Alcohol should be possible, but maximum moderate level. Alcohol has a tendency to lower the NT's, what makes people vulnerable to depression.

Some medications can be dangerous to combine. I suspect for Lithium it's possible, because I have seen people drinking beer with it.

It depends how much you drink and how often I'd say. If you dehydrate your Lithium levels rise. If you went on a 'lads holiday' for two weeks of drinking and bar-hopping in Ibiza, for example, you could end up having those Lithium levels rising to dangerous levels. It's certainly one to take seriously.

I have been diagnosed bipolar 2, CPTSD, OCD, GAD. I use marijuana. It helps with anxiety, sleep, and nightmares, among other things. It's never triggered a manic episode or psychosis for me. That's just my experience. I'll be glad when we have more research and information available to us now that it is being legalized a state at a time across the USA.

I used to abuse alcohol regularly. I now drink occasionally. I use pot and it doesnt seem to effect my bi polar 2.
I actually will work harder when I smoke pot oddly enough.
Everything in moderation.

I think you should be careful man. For me personally I love both smoking and drinking, and both of them just seem to calm me down. Although, I’ve had times where drinking only made me manic.

Yes everything in moderation. And also everyone is different and can experience different effects. So you need to be aware that while one person can consume some substance without issue, that may not be the case for you (and vice versa of course)

Beware that we are at high risk of substance abuse, so if you choose to use, watch your intake. I self-treated with ever-increasing doses of Scotch for several years. Bad choice. It made my liver unhappy, but I recovered quickly when I quit drinking alcohol.

Marijuana gives me flight of ideas, which I hate, so I was never tempted.

Alcohol in moderation; unless you are prone to abusing it in which case avoid it like the plague. Marijuana, forget about it. Its a straight path to mania and psychosis.
