I would honestly not be surprised if Atos/the DWP have people take pictures of the demonstrators, and then subsequently research the people photographed in order to look for ESA/DLA claimants. And if they don't, then the right-wing media will.

I think BillFish was joking with his comment, but I'm deadly serious.

Genuine question here.

Why are you targeting ATOS? Surely it's this coalition government you should be targeting? This government knows Atos is onto a hiding to nothing and it deflects the blame away from them. ATOS isn't going to bite the hand that feeds them is it?

I'm sick to the back teeth with all the mainstream parties and have no affinity with any of them. Maybe it's better if everyone did a protest vote and voted UKIP? After all the 3 main parties are are running scared from UKIP at the moment and it's growing popularity.

I don't think voting UKIP is a good idea.
Someone shared their ideas on benefits on facebook, it was quite a while ago now, but it sounds like they're just as bad as the rest.
There is no genuine alternative, or so it seems.

I would like to protest, but I think TheRedStar has a point. To me it is a real fear that if I ever went to a demonstration like this it would be seen that i'm "Fit for work" and that i'm just an "idle scrounger". x

I went to one of them there demonstrations once, and ended up with my photo in the Daily Mail! Luckily my head was obscured by a placard, and I could only tell it was me by my dodgy leg! I've never been so thankful for a strategically placed placard! :D

Not worth the chance of losing your benefits for something that will have no effect.
ATOS are only the messengers, its the DWP who fire the bullets.

Interestingly enough did anyone hear Cameron's speech about the floods, and (How we are not a poor Country, there is lots of money in the pot) we shall do all we can to help those who are suffering.

Shows how he basis his concern, not on the sick, who can no longer put money back into the Country, but only on those who are still giving...

They are saying, he might have shot himself in the foot with that statement.

ATOS is a collaborator.

I think it's fully understood that it's the Tories behind this.

Where I am it's a static demo that lasts all day and you are free to come and go as you please.

If you attend a demo for five minutes does that mean you aren't suicidally depressed and extremely socially anxious?
I will not be speaking to anyone.

Cameron is only interested in the floods now they have hit the home counties and middle England, he didn't really give a flying f*** about Cornwall IMO. He's worried it will lose the Tories votes if he doesn't make a public show of offering help.

I wouldn't be able to cope with attending a demo. If that makes me a traitor to the cause, so be it. It has nothing to do with me being worried about benefits. I am sure this will be seen as a paltry excuse because people worse off than me will be attending. So be it, there is plenty of judgement to be had with everything I do or don't do.

I think some people believe it will be a show of solidarity and therefore make people feel better. Even when these sorts of demos do no good (look at the anti-Iraq war demos), people feel better knowing they did something, it gives them a sense of agency, IMO. Otherwise you would just sit back and let all the rubbish things in the world happen. Though i admit when I was younger I was very much into all this changing the world stuff, and as I've got older i've got more jaded and tired and selfish and apathetic. Sometimes I wonder what happened, and wish I could be one of those activist types, but it just isnt me.

I wouldn't risk it if I were on benefits. if someone snaps a pic of you in a social setting and you get benefits for social anxiety, could be dangerous.

It could, which is nuts on their part as you could be doing that as part of an effort to get yourself well. I know I go to meetups and find them incredibly difficult and don't always enjoy them but drag myself there, to TRY. If I were on sickness I would worry about things like going to the gym as well - even though part of it is my weight/food/body obsession and part of it is trying to help myself with my mood and part of it is what my physio has told me to do in the gym to strengthen my bad leg, which cannot be done at home.

I suppose a depressed person can never ever smile in public or they will be accused of faking it. I've even managed to convince myself at times I'm not really ill because of stuff like this. It shows a very poor understanding on their part.

i feel exactly the same way - & you look at all the social movements/campaigns of the 60's, it's not really changed anything, nothing is really any different, all the primary issues/problems are the same. How do you genuinely/fundamentally change the system/World?

I don't want to get into the specifics of it, but Ukip's politics tend to make me very uneasy and so there's no way I could ever vote for them... as it goes I am now looking beyond the mainstream parties, but am gravitating towards the Green Party.

Also fit 4 work if you can socialise, write and join in on internet forums.
This reminds me of something I read last year about people on an eating disorders forum being told by some pillock that if they can write online about their illness, then they're fit to work on computers. Of course, there's a big difference between having the practical knowledge of computers to participate in internet debate, and having the ability to do many specific I.T. profession computing tasks, plus of course there's the basic availability of such work, but why let such trivial details get in the way of being an ignorant, prejudiced twat?

Interestingly enough did anyone hear Cameron's speech about the floods, and (How we are not a poor Country, there is lots of money in the pot) we shall do all we can to help those who are suffering.

Just further proof of how we're now both a rich country and one that's on the verge of bankruptcy, depending on what suits the Tories' needs at the time. When it comes to flood aid for Tory constituencies, quantitative easing (a.k.a. 'bankers' benefit'), and seven figure salaries - plus bonuses, of course - for employees of state-owned banks, then money is no object. However, when it comes to anything constituting welfare or public services, we're apparently on the verge of becoming the next Greece.

So what's the actual truth?

The New Stateman yesterday published an interesting piece on this subject, but in the meantime the Tories have backtracked somewhat on their leader's assertion with Patrick McLoughlin - the Secretary of State for Transport - stating that there is 'no blank cheque' after all.

ATOS is a collaborator.

I think it's fully understood that it's the Tories behind this.
While I hate to be fair to the Tories, nevertheless we should probably all remember that it was Labour who originally signed the contract with Atos, and indeed created the Work Capability Assessment (WCA). As we would also probably do well to be mindful that the current (Rachel Reeves) and former (Liam Byrne) relevant shadow ministers have often come out with crap which marks them out as being little better than IDS-lite figures... sadly, the benefit-claimant-bashing demographic is one that all of the big three is trying to appeal to, and in doing so they're all catering to these people's poisonous beliefs.

It could, which is nuts on their part as you could be doing that as part of an effort to get yourself well. I know I go to meetups and find them incredibly difficult and don't always enjoy them but drag myself there, to TRY. I can completely empathise with this... funnily enough I felt like a complete fraud when I went swimming a few days ago, which kind of spoilt the good feeling I got from doing the activity. It's the same whenever I'm able to easily do something I enjoy... I fu*king hate how the cu*ts - Tories, their voters, the right-wing media - have put that sh*t in my head. I find that the best thing to do when their damn thought-policing kicks off in my mind is to remember the things which - even when I'm in the best of moods - I'm nevertheless still unable to do.

Yesterday I thought again about going to a demo at an assessment centre (or 'Lourdes', as such places have amusingly been nicknamed) and wearing a balaclava, but I wouldn't put it past the police (who no doubt will be in 'fascist stormtrooper mode') to force me to remove it under 'anti-terror laws' or some such bullsh*t. Especially if I went to Atos head office, which would be my preferred choice of venue.
