I have been struggling with depression for many years. I have taken meds in the past, most of which have stopped working, or have bad side effects.

I was wondering if anyone here has tried ketamine? It is supposed to be a new treatment that works quite quickly, for those with treatment resistant depression.

I wouldn't want to mess with that stuff, I saw a documentary about people who were addicted to it, even though it had permanently damaged there ability to urinate properly they couldnt stop using it if I remember correctly.

The street drug version is cut with all kinds of nasty substances which means I wouldn't touch it. The medical stuff is for extreme pain only and rarely given. It is addictive and dangerous and not something I would recommend to anyone. Go via doctors and know that you often have to pester them to get the right level of help and not just get fobbed off with anything they give for ease on their account.

I am not referring to the street drug version. I am talking about IV Ketamine given by a physician. It is supposed to help people with treatment resistant depression. It is supposed to have an almost immediate effect, unlike all other types of psychotropic meds.

Ketamine infusion

I'm in a program that treats treatment resistant major depressive disorder patients with Ketamine. It's an experimental treatment and the reason I qualified is that my symptoms do not respond to any of the conventional drug treatments. Ketamine treament is on the frontier of psychiatric care, its costly, it lacks the body of evidence necessary for government approval and the long-term effects are unknown.

I haven't written about my experience here as I'm unsure whether Ketamine treatment that's provided by a physician is permitted in the UK (I'm in the US). I wouldn't want to seen as suggesting that patients with treatment resistant depression obtain Ketamine or any other drug illegally.

Those of us diagnosed with MDD-TRD are quite often desperate for relief from symptoms, leading to unfortunate decisions about sham treatments, unproven drugs or contraband. I see there's discussions of other unproven treatments here but I'm not sure I want to contribute to that, I really don't know what to do with what I know.
