Anyone had memory, retention, learning issues from depression and got better after remission?

For the last 2 years i have been dealing with a depressive episode, which just became acute due to a major life breaking change.
During this time, my memory, short amd long term, retention, and ability to learn new info has been getting progressively worse.
Research tells me this could actually improve and be restored once the depression is under control (just started meds and therapy, hoping to find some combo that works.
So, my question: Has anyone been through this, achieved some form of remission, and their faculties were actually restored?
I am terrified that 30+ years of depression has permanently impaired my brain.

I sometimes believe I may have dimentia

I accept my memory isn't good (I'm told things and instantly forget), but it's getting worse... not sure if it's related to the fact that my depression is getting worse, or their is something else behind it- like my memory is just.... well, gone, or going (I was about to say something else, but it wouldn't have been apreciated. lol)

Hello
We cannot stop the age- related mental/cognitive decline that people tend to forget.
But if depression itself is the only reason for cognitive decline, it’ll be gradually coming back as depression is improving. But we still have to consider the effects of psychotropic meds we’re on. Long time use of benzodiazepine seems to be negatively affecting our memory and concentration. Our brain is pretty complicated.

By the way, i’m Waiting for my brain function to come back to work again. I suffered severe depression after I quit Lexapro 2 years ago. I was on Lexapro for more than 15 years. I’m on Prozac 40mg for 5 months now (again SSRI) but I tried to stop talking anti-anxiety med (Lorazepam=benzodiazepine) as short as possible due to my concern of the possible brain dysfunction. I’m still on recovery.

Hope your condition will improve

Catty5,
Thanks for sharing your experiences and sorry to hear about the cognitive function issues, its very scary...im hoping since im still kind of young-ish (42) and no family history of alzheimers, dementia and the like, that if and when i get the right cocktail and therapy it will start to come back...otherwise my ability to work may be seriously impaired as well...hindsight but i just wish i had done all this after my hospitalization when i was 21 and not 21 years later when ive already screwed up so much of my life and time here

I had cognitive problems from depression. But now I'm able to read books again and have a better attention span. Eating healthy and less often has helped. So has meditating or praying when stressed. But they also say that getting too intelligent can cause other problems so a happy medium is good.

Hello
Depression impairs cognitive ability. Lots of researches proved in their empirical studies. But depression doesn’t cause dementia. I’m a healthcare professional in the US. I test, diagnose and treat people (I’ve been off work due to my brain condition 🙀). I saw “what is depression” with my eyes. But the cognitive function is gradually coming back.... you’re still young. Alzheimer’s seems mostly genetic. You’re too young to be demented. Yeah right med and therapy are helpful.

I'm currently going through the same thing as you and I see this is from back in April, just wondering, has this improved any for you?

The answer to the two questions you pose in the title of the thread is: yes I have and yes I have.
I have suffered from depression of varying degrees of severity for maybe 30 years, but went through a severe bout of depression about 15 years ago. I was on a very high dose of medication for about 3 years. My memory of that time is very sketchy. But my memory has very much improved since and I think it is more or less normal for my age. I am still working even though most of my friends are retired. I am even now learning a foreign language.

During my partial recoveries from depression that I have had, my cognitive functioning has definitely been better than when I am in a pit of despair. The further I fall the more brain fog I get.
