I'm obsessive about old memories. It's tiresome to replay things from long ago. I can sorta see the appeal, however. There's a fantasy aspect to them, like how things might have been different. But I don't seem to ever forget them for long. One in particular has been with me for a few months but the memory is from 2012. Others go back way before that, to even 30 years ago. Seems odd to still be dwelling on those things, though I guess I sort of understand why I do.

Yes. You just stop them in their tracks as they're occurring. Direct your mind elsewhere. Stay busy. What matters is today and the future...don't waste time in the past. You can't change the past but you can make changes moving forward.

I tend to live in the past. Even though my past isn't great, it seems safer to be there than in the present or future. So I understand.

i have the same thing, i obsess over super specific small things i did like 10 years ago, usually things which my OCD convinces me were super embarassing, even though rationally i can see that they weren't. anyway, it really bothers me, and it took me a really long time to even notice that this thought pattern wasn't healthy.

This is a really tough one to answer.

The only reply that might be valid is to do meditation and just let the obsessive thoughts occur. Blocking or distraction is only a temporary fix.

Try some nice guided audio meditations

Or download an app. My bro in law uses one called My Brain (sorry if I got name wrong)

the obsessions can come and go, or i can have constant obsessions over one thing for a certain period of time, and then they disappear to never come back up. i guess i eventually “forget” about certain obsessions in order for new ones to take over in my mind.

I had OCD related to daily grooming and disinfecting everything. I've spent entire days disinfecting and I had a 2 year period where it took me up to 8 hours to complete my shower routine! Both were a nightmare, I didn't want to do it but felt powerless to stop the behavior. They have both faded to almost nill. Moving to different locations helped. Also, my voice was the one ordering me around, and had decided it didn't want to do those things anymore! Thank God!
